The deadly inferno has raised familiar questions about fire safety regulations across Thailand, especially at entertainment venues.

Thai authorities say they are investigating whether negligence caused the fire, as survivors reported locked doors and a lack of signage demarcating emergency exits.

But some question whether relevant government agencies should also be held accountable for failing to properly enforce regulations.

Athipat echoes these concerns. “I would like places to have higher safety standards so that when we perform we can enjoy ourselves as before without having to worry.

“Nowadays, I think if I or someone in my band goes on stage, they’ll think [the fire] and I feel alarmed and uncomfortable,” he says.

Thotsakan will mourn his losses for a while, suggests Athipat. “We may be a little disoriented, but we will restore our balance and get back to normal,” he continues, urging fans to look forward to what’s next for the band.

Chanate says she will take time to reconsider whether she should continue performing given the safety risks and the fact that she has a family, including a young child, to support.

“If you ask me if I love it, then yes. I left a regular job to focus on music… [But] I have to think about it again. “I think everyone has fears,” he says.

Memories of the shocking tragedy will stay with Chanate and the other survivors for the rest of their lives, but the guitarist also wants to remember the last thing he saw just before all hell broke loose:

“The smiles of the bar-goers enjoying our music.”
