While there aren\u2019t any known instances of the scenario (so far), a pair of lawmakers in Washington state hope to ensure it stays that way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2026\/microchipped-at-work-washington-state-bill-aims-to-ban-employers-from-using-dehumanizing-tech\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Introduced earlier in the year<\/a> by Dem. Reps. Brianna Thomas and Lisa Parshley, <a href=\"https:\/\/lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov\/biennium\/2025-26\/Pdf\/Bills\/House%20Bills\/2303.pdf?q=20260108141552\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HB 2303<\/a> explicitly states that businesses \u201cmay not request, require, or coerce any employee to have a microchip implanted in the employee for any reason.\u201d The bill has officially passed through the House and a Senate committee with bipartisan support, and is now on its way to becoming a law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThe Senate Labor and Commerce Committee voted to advance the measure to the next step after laughing about it briefly before passing it,\u201d local news outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13seattle.com\/news\/wa-lawmakers-bill-microchipping-workers\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fox 13 recently reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Subdermal microchips certainly have their uses. They have helped track <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/category\/pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost pets<\/a> for years, and can provide critical patient information in certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/category\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical situations<\/a>\u2014neither instance is affected by the law. And although pressuring workers to get chipped is likely illegal on numerous grounds, it never hurts to formally get something on the books.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cThere are reports of voluntary microchipping. It would be extraordinarily difficult\u2014if not impossible\u2014to mitigate the civil rights and workers\u2019 rights issues that would come if and when companies start requiring these,\u201d Rep. Thomas said in a statement, arguing that workplace power dynamics make \u201ctrue employee consent\u2026impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want to have to try to clean up an impossible mess after it\u2019s too late.
