Schamus also produced the film with Chile\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/fabula\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fabula\" data-tag=\"fabula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fabula<\/a>, run by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larra\u00edn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDescribed as a \u201csharp, dark and painfully funny take of \u2018the great Mexican dream\u2019\u2013 the tragicomedy of being Mexican and wanting to \u2018make it\u2019 at any cost,\u201d the story centers on Jos\u00e9 S\u00e1nchez, renowned for his impressive mustache, sharp wit and relentless drive. After enduring a tough patch in business, fate changes his course, turning him into El Serpiente, a ruthless political strategist. To maintain his power, he must secure one final, perilous deal \u2014 and this time, his charm alone might not be enough to see him through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAdri\u00e1n V\u00e1zquez (\u201cLa Brava F.C.\u201d) plays S\u00e1nchez with Jero Medina (\u201cS.W.A.T.\u201d) and Ver\u00f3nica Bravo (\u201cLa hora de los valientes\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c\u2019The Son-in-Law\u2019 explores betrayal as a central narrative thread, portraying it as a widespread practice in this country. The film is a provocation, inviting us to examine a reality that is equally ridiculous and contradictory,\u201d said Naranjo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis is Schamus\u2019 second outing in Mexico for Netflix, after \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/tv\/global\/james-schamus-tv-series-somos-netflix-1234980828\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Somos,\u201d his first television series, which debuted in June 2021. <\/a>The six-episode series is based on the ProPublica report \u201cHow the U.S. Triggered a Massacre in Mexico\u201d by Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist Ginger Thompson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cEver since we finished\u00a0\u2018Somos,\u2019 I\u2019ve dreamed of returning to Mexico, hoping I might once again experience that same energy, talent and kindness. With\u00a0\u2018The Son-in-Law,\u2019 that dream came true, he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a new adventure and an even bigger explosion of Mexican creativity. So while our characters\u2019 \u2018great Mexican dream\u2019 became a rather insane, absurd tragicomedy \u2013 for me, it\u2019s been a simple, wonderful dream.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFabula has a number of projects made for or picked up by Netflix, among them, the latest directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/pablo-larrain\/\" id=\"auto-tag_pablo-larrain\" data-tag=\"pablo-larrain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pablo Larrain<\/a>: \u201cThe Count\u201d and \u201cMaria,\u201d starring Angelina Jolie. They produced the first fiction feature by Chile\u2019s multi-nominated documentary filmmaker Maite Alberdi, \u201cIn Her Place\u201d (\u201cEl lugar de la otra\u201d) and whose \u201cThe Mole Agent\u201d was spun off into an English-language TV series starring Ted Danson, \u201cA Man on the Inside,\u201d also streaming on Netflix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Son-in-Law\u201d is the first project Fabula has produced in Mexico for Netflix. Company set up an outpost in Mexico a few years ago, with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/film\/news\/fabula-guillermo-calderon-maquillame-otra-vez-1234985349\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guillermo Calderon\u2019s \u201cMaking it up\u201d (\u201cMaqu\u00edllame Otra Vez\u201d) its first feature produced in the country. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe are honored to be part of a project directed by the talented Mexican filmmaker Gerardo Naranjo, with the renowned producer and screenwriter James Schamus, and produced by the Larra\u00edn brothers. I thank all of them for their courage and commitment to Mexican cinema.
