View <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/opinions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more opinion<\/a> on CNN.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<cite class=\"source__cite vossi-source__cite\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__location vossi-source__location\" data-editable=\"location\"><wbr\/><\/span><span class=\"source__text\" data-editable=\"source\">CNN<\/span><wbr\/><span class=\"source__separator\">\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n    <\/cite><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgma2two000o67nt0hqg9ghk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Ralph Nader ran for president in 2000, he offered a simple rationale for a bid that would ultimately help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/the-nader-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cspoil\u201d<\/a> the election for the Democratic ticket I was privileged to be on with Al Gore. In Nader\u2019s view, the two parties were ideologically indistinguishable.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjo00293b6dy8hlw350@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That argument was baseless. There were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/1094530.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significant differences<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/story?id=122748&amp;page=1#:~:text=Gore%3A%20Strong%20supporter%20of%20abortion,parents%20before%20performingabortions%20on%20teenagers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">policy<\/a> between the George W. Bush-Dick Cheney ticket \u2014 which ended up victorious, in part <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/articles\/2016\/05\/31\/nader_elected_bush_why_we_shouldnt_forget_130715.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thanks to Nader<\/a> \u2014 and ours. For Nader, this wasn\u2019t really about the \u201ctwo-party duopoly,\u201d as he coined it. The core problem in Washington, DC, is that they\u2019re too divided to get much done.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjo002b3b6dyscmk9ab@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/new-poll-shows-americans-want-congressional-cooperation-but-expect-gridlock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">majority<\/a> of Americans long for the era when Republicans and Democrats worked together to find bipartisan solutions to big problems, many members of Congress refuse to work together on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/immigration-reform-failure-congress-timeline-rcna64467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immigration<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-govt-touches-debt-limit-amid-standoff-between-republicans-democrats-2023-01-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debt ceiling<\/a> and other issues critical to the nation, even when bipartisanship is the way to restore our common prosperity and security.\u00a0Indeed, today, with Republicans controlling the House and Democrats the Senate, bipartisanship is the only way to pass any legislation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjo002c3b6dnv6fwjfq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While undoing the divisions plaguing our political system will not be simple, there is one step that can be taken \u2014 and it begins with giving voters a real alternative in the 2024 presidential election.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjo002d3b6dul33ohnh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most often, when Americans cast their votes for president and vice president, their ballot has only two viable tickets: one nominated by the Democratic Party and the other by the Republican Party. But what would happen if they had a third viable option?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjo002e3b6dley51ftl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The process for adding that third viable option is not only arduous and time-consuming, but it <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Ballot_access_for_presidential_candidates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">varies from state to state<\/a> and in the District of Columbia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjo002f3b6dtjidccw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nolabels.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No Labels<\/a>, a nonprofit organization that I co-chair, is laying the groundwork for such a campaign in 2024. Since early 2022, our team has been diligently working across the country to obtain ballot access for a potential No Labels ticket, typically by collecting a certain number of petition signatures from voters in each state.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjo002g3b6dirl8q01k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If we are successful, a unity ticket \u2014 comprised of one Democrat and one Republican \u2014 could be presented to voters right next to the Republican and Democratic nominees.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjo002h3b6d4lyz4k98@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            We think of this as an insurance policy for the country \u2014 an option to be deployed if, and only if, both of the two major party nominees fail to offer voters a choice of candidates they\u2019d like to vote for or a way out of the partisan divisiveness that now dominates in the nation\u2019s capital. We will be consistently monitoring the sentiment of Americans through our own research and polling, as well as public polling, to make that determination.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjo002i3b6dh3b1gtnv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In this and several other ways, No Labels\u2019 effort could not be more different from the \u201cspoiler\u201d campaign that Nader attempted two decades ago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjp002j3b6dwd2ztzkr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            First, if No Labels were to lend its ballot lines to a presidential ticket, the presidential candidate would be a Democrat and the vice presidential candidate would be a Republican, or vice versa. As such, it would appeal to some voters who might otherwise have voted for the Democratic ticket, and other voters who might otherwise have voted for the Republican ticket. And it would appeal to still other voters who would not have voted for either.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjp002k3b6dczti3lgj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These nominees would be selected by a diverse and distinguished group of citizens serving on a committee \u2014 and would be ratified by delegates who would gather at the No Labels National Convention planned for April 2024. This convention will occur about six weeks after the March 5th \u201cSuper Tuesday\u201d primaries, a day which historically has clarified who the major party nominees will be.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjp002l3b6d46u2gx0s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Second, No Labels\u2019 2024 effort is not designed to push the Democratic nominees to the left or Republican candidates to the right. Rather, it\u2019s intended to force one or both parties to appeal to America\u2019s growing commonsense majority. If they don\u2019t, our ballot line will create the opening for a unity ticket that will.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjp002m3b6dkej6dddx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23743279-cnn-poll-one-third-of-americans-say-biden-deserves-to-be-reelected-in-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0recent polling by CNN<\/a>, the number of individuals who identify as independent is on the rise, now comprising 41% of the electorate \u2014 compared to only 28% who described themselves as Democrats and 31% who described themselves as Republicans. These numbers are more evidence that there could be a potential path to victory for an independent ticket in 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjp002n3b6d86ap0sgm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But if there doesn\u2019t appear to be such a path in the months ahead, No Labels will stand down, focusing instead on the work we have done over the last decade to elect and organize members of the House and Senate who have demonstrated the courage to reach across the aisle \u2014 including members of the bipartisan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nolabels.org\/problem-solvers-caucus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House Problem Solvers Caucus.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/clgmnebgc000h3b6ddvgaqo4e@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small vossi-factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__\">\n<h3 class=\"factbox_inline-small__title vossi-factbox_inline-small__title inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"title\">\n    Get Our Free Weekly Newsletter<br \/>\n  <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjp002o3b6dw27p2yf6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It seems the Biden administration already may be beginning to recognize the imperative of appealing to the commonsense majority. President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/20\/politics\/biden-dc-crime-bill\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently signed into law<\/a> a Republican measure to strike down a Washington, DC, crime bill reducing penalties for those who commit violent crimes, and he announced more stringent <a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/biden-is-moving-right-on-immigration-will-that-hurt-him-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">border control<\/a> policies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjp002p3b6dbo5daoir@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Our hope is that the Republicans jockeying for their party\u2019s nomination will similarly see the need to reach out beyond their base instead of appealing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiAkMKA0pD-AhWYFlkFHWj1D8wQFnoECAgQAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.heritage.org%2Feducation%2Fcommentary%2Fdesantis-tackles-divisive-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-programs-college&amp;usg=AOvVaw32w8U7U0n1pHGtkF_gbxUk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">divisive<\/a> policies and politics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clgmadvjp002q3b6dtavfp5es@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the end, No Labels hopes <em>not<\/em> to have to offer our ballot line to an independent unity ticket. We want the parties to come to their senses. But judging from the angry and apocalyptic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/04\/02\/no-labels-third-party-election\/?itid=ap_michaelscherer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reactions<\/a> of strategists in both parties at the thought of No Labels\u2019 insurance policy, it is clear that party leaders now know that there could be a political cost to ignoring the commonsense majority.
