\n Of the many dark gifts Showtime\u2019s eerie hit series \u201cYellowjackets<\/a>\u201d serves up for us, the juiciest this season is by far the music.\n <\/p>\n

\n The show \u2013 which bounces between a troupe of teen soccer players trapped in the 1990s<\/a> Canadian wilderness after a plane crash and the survivors\u2019 corresponding adult selves in the present day \u2013 embraces nostalgia, incorporating long-cherished tunes from the tail end of last century, with staples from Tori Amos, early Smashing Pumpkins, Massive Attack, Veruca Salt and much more.\n <\/p>\n

\n In Sunday\u2019s episode of \u201cYellowjackets,\u201d alt-rock queen Alanis Morissette<\/a> will debut a version of the show\u2019s theme song, \u201cNo Return,\u201d and has already released it as a single.\n <\/p>\n

\n One of the most unexpected and successful uses of throwback music came in the first episode of Season 2 last month, when Warren Kole\u2019s Jeff had a moment to himself in the car after an intense tryst with wife Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) \u2013 during which he rocks out hard to Papa Roach\u2019s \u201cLast Resort\u201d (sure, the track actually came out in 2000, but that doesn\u2019t take away from its retro vibe).\n <\/p>\n

\n In an interview with CNN, the show\u2019s music supervisor, Nora Felder, explained that the Papa Roach song selection was scripted, and \u201cserved as a perfect physical outlet for Warren whose anxious feelings were riding high while sitting alone in his garage.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Other standout moments in the script, however, are hers to interpret, and Felder relishes the opportunity to match those moments with the right songs from the period.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI re-immerse myself into the show\u2019s era and spirit of the times as I start to build my playlists for the show,\u201d she said. \u201cThe main thing I try to keep in mind is to just stay true to the story and let it tell me what it might need musically.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Case in point, from the same episode \u2013 the placement of Amos\u2019s signature track \u201cCornflake Girl,\u201d off her groundbreaking 1994 sophomore album \u201cUnder the Pink.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The song \u2013 which appropriately has the lyric \u201cThings are getting kind of gross\u201d just as teen Shauna (Sophie N\u00e9lisse) is about to ingest something unthinkable \u2013 \u201ccame to mind pretty quickly as a possibility\u201d to Felder.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI felt that Amos\u2019s lyrics could serve as a befitting launchpad for the first episode\u2019s ending \u2013 not only as a reflection of Young Shauna\u2019s state of mind,\u201d she noted, \u201cbut also as a reflection of the past and present moods and mentalities lived out by the other \u2018Yellowjackets\u2019 characters in Season 2.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Felder\u2019s work is challenging, in the sense that there is often an ideal wish-list selection for a song during a certain moment in each script, which then might change either due to something technical or because the needs of the scene evolve during production, as a result of many elements, including the actors\u2019 performances.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cEveryone on the team always wants the best song-select possible to enhance the story,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen we get to post (production), the common question that comes up among us during the collaboration process is simply, \u2018Do we think we can beat this?\u2019\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n During that collaborative process, Felder says she doesn\u2019t \u201cbelieve there is an exact roadmap into how to merge songs with any given scene or story.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI always say, \u2018Let the picture tell you what it needs.\u2019 (Kind of like the Wilderness I guess?)\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Another moment that feels perfectly melded to the music playing is the now-infamous \u2018last supper\u2019 scene<\/a> from last week\u2019s second episode, which boasts Radiohead\u2019s \u201cClimbing By The Walls\u201d from their mindblowing 1995 album \u201cOK Computer\u201d on the soundtrack.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe song seems to refer to those unspeakable monsters that can live in one\u2019s head,\u201d Felder noted, referencing the strange collective hallucinations the group undergoes while cannibalizing one of their own. \u201cI can\u2019t think of a more perfect way to hauntingly accent (that) scene, a.k.a. \u2018the feast.\u2019\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n To drive home just how important music is to the specific ambient feel of \u201cYellowjackets,\u201d one need look no further than the super creepy Season 2 trailer<\/a> for the show, which features Florence + The Machine\u2019s exceptional and haunting rendition of No Doubt\u2019s timeless 1995 hit, \u201cJust A Girl.<\/a>\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019m such a huge fan of \u2018Yellowjackets\u2019 and this era of music, and this song especially had a huge impact on me growing up, so I was thrilled to be asked to interpret it in a \u2018deeply unsettling\u2019 way for show,\u201d band frontwoman Florence Welch said in a statement shared with CNN.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe tried to really add some horror elements to this iconic song to fit the tone of the show. And as someone who\u2019s first musical love was pop punk and Gwen Stefani, it was a dream job.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Of her collaboration with \u201cYellowjackets,\u201d Morrisette, too, felt inspired by the show.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI see parallels between \u2018Yellowjackets\u2019 and my perspective while songwriting: the sheer intensity, that going for the jugular with no fear around going for the profane,\u201d Morissette said in a statement. \u201cI\u2019ve strived my entire career to support the empowerment of women and sensitives, and see the world through the female lens, and what\u2019s so wonderful about this show is that each character is allowed to be dynamic and complex as opposed to oversimplified, reduced versions of women. I feel honoured to be a part of the legacy of \u2018Yellowjackets.\u2019\u201d\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
