\n\tBrendan Carr<\/a>, the Trump-appointed chairman of the FCC<\/a>, has not directly weighed in on the backlash over the agency\u2019s move to force Disney\u2019s ABC to reapply for spectrum licenses<\/a> on an accelerated schedule \u2014 a move that comes as President Trump has called for Jimmy Kimmel to be fired<\/a> over a joke the late-night host made about First Lady Melania Trump.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut on Wednesday evening, Carr did post a riposte to a commenter on X who took aim at the FCC chief. a A user named Brian Christopher tagged Carr in a post<\/a> that said \u201cThis dude @BrendanCarrFCC is a whole bitch. Can\u2019t wait till the next president replaces his goofy ass.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tTo that, Carr responded<\/a> with a meme drawn from NBC\u2019s \u201cParks and Recreation,\u201d quoting a line delivered by Ron Swanson (played by Nick Offerman): \u201cNever half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was not an atypical response from Carr, who, like others in the MAGA-verse, fire back at critics using memes meant to convey bravado and defiance.<\/p>\n

\n\tOfficially, the FCC\u2019s Media Bureau,\u00a0in its April 28 order<\/a>, said it was calling in ABC<\/a>\u2019s licenses for eight owned-and-operated stations for early review pursuant to an investigation into Disney and ABC over potential violations of the FCC\u2019s \u201cprohibition on unlawful discrimination\u201d \u2014 in other words, the agency is reviewing ABC\u2019s licenses as part of its probe into the company\u2019s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut the timing of the order clearly left the impression that the FCC was acting in response to outrage expressed by Trump and others over Kimmel\u2019s comedy bit in which he said Melania had the \u201cglow of an expectant widow.\u201d That came two days before the actual White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner on April 25 was thrown into chaos after an armed man charged through a security perimeter outside the ballroom before he was apprehended and subsequently charged with an assassination attempt on the president.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe optics of the situation \u2014 in which it seems as if the FCC is attempting to punish or intimidate ABC over Kimmel\u2019s joke \u2014 drew condemnation from advocacy groups and lawmakers.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmong those criticizing the agency\u2019s move was Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. \u201cIt is not government\u2019s job to censor speech, and I do not believe the FCC should operate as the speech police,\u201d Cruz said about the accelerated license review of the ABC-owned stations.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn response to Cruz\u2019s criticism, an FCC spokesperson said, \u201cAs the agency decision makes clear, the early renewal order is based on a long-running FCC investigation into Disney\u2019s DEI conduct, not any speech.\u201d<\/p>\n
