Americans are still almost entirely reliant on congested highways or the headache-inducing stress of an airport and airline network prone to meltdowns.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-abd0450c49b9fe06fb7a869e46df1819@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            China has built around 26,000 miles (42,000 kilometers) of dedicated high-speed railways since 2008 and plans to top 43,000 miles (70,000 kilometers) by 2035.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-35f729c389cd9907c5af24404b6ebde8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, the United States has just 375 route-miles of track cleared for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/content\/dam\/projects\/dotcom\/english\/public\/documents\/corporate\/nationalfactsheets\/Amtrak-Company-Profile-FY2021-030922.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">operation at more than 100 mph<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<aside data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/pull-quote\/instances\/pull_quote-8abcf98448d4f3b071d09fc563eba95c@published\" data-component-name=\"pull-quote\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"pull-quote vossi-pull-quote inline-placeholder\">\n            <svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"icon-sig-quote-default\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path d=\"M9.277 6l.536.937c-1.224 1.12-1.584 2.961-1.6 4.236v.016h3.569v7.781H4v-6.103l.006-.02C4.037 10.014 6.287 6.874 9.276 6zm9.079 0l.536.937c-1.224 1.12-1.584 2.961-1.6 4.236v.016h3.569v7.78h-7.782v-6.102l.006-.02c.031-2.833 2.281-5.973 5.27-6.847z\"\/><\/svg><\/p>\n<div class=\" pull-quote__section vossi-pull-quote__section\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"pull-quote__text  vossi-pull-quote__text inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\">\n                    Many Americans have no concept of high-speed rail and fail to see its value. Vantuono, editor-in-chief of Railway Age, North America\u2019s oldest railroad industry publication.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-72f652b31e8e9d15b511b06c7dec403e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cars and airliners have dominated long-distance travel in the United States since the 1950s, rapidly usurping a network of luxurious passenger trains with evocative names such as \u201cThe Empire Builder,\u201d \u201cSuper Chief\u201d and \u201cSilver Comet.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-a2c5de3c90f099c9dfa44e1e346bcc11@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Deserted by Hollywood movie stars and business travelers, famous railroads such as the New York Central were largely bankrupt by the early 1970s, handing over their loss-making<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/amtrak-america-moment-50-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> trains to Amtrak<\/a>, the national passenger train operator founded in 1971.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-b62fe413655fde89c5657383725bb1f6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the decades since that traumatic retrenchment, US freight railroads have largely flourished. Passenger rail seems to have been a very low priority for US lawmakers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-59c3dd67e3e4ba2720519f49ce0fd016@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Powerful airline, oil and auto industry lobbies in Washington have spent millions maintaining that superiority, but their position is weakening in the face of environmental concerns and worsening congestion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-23f9bcbcd3ffddea8eafb0b63e01a859@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            US <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/15\/politics\/biden-signing-ceremony-infrastructure-bill-white-house\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Joe Biden\u2019s $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill <\/a>includes an unprecedented $170 billion for improving railroads.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-8639d927fa9d8121d1dd294153bcdf6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some of this will be invested in repairing Amtrak\u2019s crumbling Northeast Corridor (NEC) linking Boston, New York and Washington.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-8ba187b92fda0ccdec6fe5acc9de2bef@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are also big plans to bring passenger trains back to many more cities across the nation \u2013 providing fast, sustainable travel to cities and regions that have not seen a passenger train for decades.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-2dd2b4b276cd8d8b15c45f225a76b4ea@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Add to this the success of the privately funded Brightline operation in Florida, which has been given the green light to build a $10 billion high-speed rail link between Los Angeles and Las Vegas by 2027, plus schemes in California, Texas and the proposed Cascadia route linking Portland, Oregon, with Seattle and Vancouver, and the United States at last appears to be on the cusp of a passenger rail revolution.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/image-949827a8762b0874247a98e3f6325270@published\" class=\"image bigger priorities to deal with,\u201d says Scott Sherin, chief commercial officer of train builder Alstom\u2019s US division.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-9772d9745fd21db52e19e2e872416b7e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut now there\u2019s a huge impetus to get things moving \u2013 it\u2019s a time of optimism. If we build it, they will come. As an industry, we\u2019re maturing, and we\u2019re ready to take the next step. Maximum speeds elsewhere are closer to 100 mph on congested tracks shared with commuter and freight trains.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-9d3f442823e38855d622eec5433254be@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This year, Amtrak plans to introduce its new generation Avelia Liberty trains to replace the life-expired Acelas on the NEC.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-53a0d6b8ea8c30f9cefbcc944ad8decc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Capable of reaching 220 mph (although they\u2019ll be limited to 160 mph on the NEC), the trains will bring Alstom\u2019s latest high-speed rail technology to North America.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-21f2ce22f9bff52ac5ac799513d08d4c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The locomotives at each end \u2013 known as power cars \u2013 are close relatives of the next generation<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/tgv-m-next-generation-high-speed-train-france\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> TGV-M trains<\/a>, scheduled to debut in France in 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-58dc5d03d77aa39582abd9142e1c2089@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sitting between the power cars are the passenger vehicles, which use Alstom\u2019s Tiltronix technology to run faster through curves by tilting their bodies, much like a MotoGP rider does. And it\u2019s not just travelers who will benefit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/paragraph-5d363b62419161a8fca54362cc66cba0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen Amtrak awarded the contract to Alstom in 2015 to 2016, the company had around 200 employees in Hornell,\u201d says Shawn D.
