\n\t\u201cGreyhound\u201d and \u201cJurassic Park III\u201d DP Shelly Johnson has been elected 50th President of the American Society of Cinematographers<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe\u00a0ASC board of governors has announced a new slate of officers. Johnson, who takes the reigns from incumbent President Mandy Walker, previously served as the org\u2019s president from 2023-25. The Board also voted in Vice Presidents Charlie Lieberman, Alice Brooks and John Simmons; Treasurer Charles Minsky; Secretary Scott Cunningham; and Sergeant-at-Arms Chris Chomyn.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt has been an honor and absolute pleasure to have served as the first female president of the ASC,\u201d\u00a0said Walker, who termed out after four years on the Board, including one as president. \u201dOver the last year, I have had amazing support from my board and the ASC staff. \u201cOur membership and the committees we now have in place create a socially vibrant and educational service for our members and the filmmaking community. I\u2019m proud to hand over to Shelly who had served me in this role and has helped make the society what it is today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe new ASC Board, elected by the organization\u2019s active membership, includes Natasha Braier, Russell Carpenter, Richard Crudo, Steven Fierberg, Michael Goi, Tommy Maddox-Upshaw, Erik Messerschmidt, M. David Mullen, Cynthia Pusheck, Nancy Schreiber, and Amy Vincent. Alternate Board Membersinclude Ernest Dickerson, Dejan Georgevich, Suki Mendencevic, Lowell Peterson and Rodney Taylor.<\/p>\n

\n\tJohnson recently completed principal photography on the World War II drama \u201cGreyhound 2: The Good Shepherd,\u201d starring Tom Hanks, which is slated for release later this year. He has a long\u2011running collaboration with director Joe Johnston that began with \u201cJurassic Park III\u201d and continued across five additional features, including \u201cHidalgo,\u201d \u201cThe Wolfman,\u201d \u201cLumen\u201d and \u201cCaptain America: The First Avenger.\u201d His other feature credits include \u201cPercy Jackson: Sea of Monsters,\u201d \u201cThe Last Castle,\u201d \u201cHonest Thief,\u201d \u201cBlacklight,\u201d \u201cBill & Ted Face the Music,\u201d \u201cSky High,\u201d Simon West\u2019s \u201cWild Card,\u201d \u201cBoundless,\u201d \u201cElevation\u201d and the upcoming \u201cSummerhouse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJohnson says, \u201cThe ASC has been instrumental in shaping cinematography since its earliest days. At its core, great cinematography is rooted in a deeply human point of view\u2014where every image reflects the cinematographer\u2019s personal vision shaped by sensitivity, intuition and intent. That perspective is developed through dialogue with peers, and sustained through a tradition of mentorship, linking one generation of image-makers to the next.\u201d He adds, \u201cThe ASC will continue to foster this exchange, creating a space where artistry and innovation meet\u2014balancing rapid technological change with the application of tools that serve expression, rather than define it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThrough a wide range of industry programs and initiatives, the ASC advances its mission to inspire the next generation of cinematographers and elevate the art of filmmaking. <\/p>\n

\n\tMore than 20 committees guide the Society\u2019s work, including the award\u2011winning Motion Imaging Technology Council (MITC), established in 2003 to examine how emerging technologies impact the imaging chain in support of filmmakers\u2019 creative goals. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Vision Committee champions the advancement of underrepresented cinematographers, their crews and other filmmakers. The Society also offers regional and international Master Classes led by ASC members, hosts Clubhouse Conversations with filmmakers discussing acclaimed work, and supports film\u2011school engagement through the Education & Outreach Committee.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
