There’s been lots of chatter in recent weeks about the mega IPOs expected to come to market this year \u2014 first among them being SpaceX<\/a>, which is set to go public in June.<\/p>\n

Is this a movie we’ve seen before? The last time there was this much hype around IPOs was during the 2021 SPAC boom. With the economy flush with cash, the high number of companies going public was one symptom of insatiable investor demand. The euphoria didn’t last, with the S&P 500 falling as much as 25% to kick off 2022.<\/p>\n

Before that, there was the surge of IPOs in 1999, as companies sought to take advantage of the market’s enthusiasm about an emerging technology in the internet. The next year, the market began a multi-year meltdown now known as the dot-com bust.<\/p>\n

Today, investors are eager to get into expected IPOs from SpaceX, OpenAI<\/a>, and Anthropic. How worried should we be that this is the same kind of over-exuberance destined to end like past market frenzies?<\/p>\n

There’s no such thing as a perfect comparison in markets, but let’s examine some of the similarities and differences between now and then:<\/p>\n
