A research team captured the first images of the wreckage of a Pan American Airways plane 74 years after it sank in the Atlantic Ocean. The Clipper Endeavor, which sank on April 11, 1952 after several engines failed shortly after takeoff, was found 2,000 feet (610 m) below sea level off the coast of Puerto Rico.
Everyone on board the flight survived the impact, but passengers struggled to locate life jackets and rafts as the plane rapidly sank. Of the 69 passengers and crew on board, only 17 survived.
The disaster led to sweeping reforms in aviation safety, including mandatory pre-flight safety briefings on all commercial flights.
The remains were found with a drone equipped with sonar. The discovery was a joint effort between Air/Sea Heritage, Deep Sea Vision (an ecological minerals company) and Discovery’s Expedition Unknown.
