Manchester Super Giants chased down a target of 81 off just 59 balls as they defeated London Spirit by seven wickets in The Hundred.

Ryana MacDonald-Gay took 4-17 as the Super Giants dismissed Spirit with nine balls to spare at Lord’s, before the visiting batsmen completed their chase for the loss of just three wickets.

Spirit were in immediate trouble after being put into bat in their first match, losing openers Grace Harris and Amy Jones for four and a golden duck.

MacDonald-Gay removed Marie Kelly and Marizanne Kapp, who top-scored with 17, while Sophie Ecclestone bowled Deandra Dottin for four.

Home captain Charlie Dean was one of four batsmen to reach double figures, reaching 14 before her innings ran out, and the innings came to an early conclusion when MacDonald-Gay trapped Katie George behind for eight.

The Super Giants, playing their first game under their new name after spending five years as the Manchester Originals, made steady work of chasing their low target.

Smriti Mandhana and captain Meg Lanning scored 33 for the opening wicket, before Kapp caught the first off lbw for 17.

Kapp struck with the next delivery, bowling Grace Scrivens, but Paige Scholfield survived the hat-trick.

Lanning was caught by Hannah Rainey for 21, but Richa Ghosh (15 not off five) and Scholfield (22 off 15) quickly finished the job, with the latter scoring fours and consecutive sixes to win the game.
