This is what adoptive parents in Singapore who care for babies think about most. For months they have been in suspense, waiting to know if they will be able to stay with their children.

Speaking to the BBC after the verdict, David, the Singaporean father whom we interviewed earlier, said he wanted both governments to make a decision soon.

“Since the case concluded, how can we move forward and what will happen to our son? It has been almost a year of fear and anxiety waiting,” said David, who spoke to us on the condition that we give him a pseudonym.

“I sincerely hope that both authorities can reach a decision based on the best interests of the children.

“We respectfully ask that in making this decision you take into account the fact that both our son and our family are victims of the circumstances surrounding this case.”

David and his wife Ally had previously told the BBC they had no idea the child they adopted in Indonesia could have been trafficked. They said they had done everything they could to conduct their own background checks.

During the adoption process they underwent numerous checks by the Singapore government which they said should have detected trafficking.

Neither the Indonesian nor Singapore authorities gave definitive answers to previous questions from the BBC about what they intend to do with the babies.

After the verdict, we asked them again.

Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said that “several aspects require further examination, including the children’s legal status, the identities of their biological parents and ongoing procedures in Singapore.”

He reiterated that he is “committed to prioritizing the best interests of children.”

The Singapore authorities have yet to respond to our latest queries.
