Noah Kahan is the latest of the musicians to respond to the White House for using his music on social media, responding to an Instagram post that used his song “American Cars.”

The White House release on Monday included images of President Donald Trump while visiting General Motors’ flagship testing site in Michigan. After many fans tagged Kahan in the comments, he responded Tuesday afternoon with a message of disapproval: “I would never approve of my music being used in support of you or this administration.”

“American Cars” was used in White House posts on both Instagram and TikTok. It appears the sound was turned off on Instagram, but it is still included in the TikTok post. Noah Levine, who co-wrote “American Cars” with Kahan, also left a comment on Instagram that was much more direct, writing, “Gordo, this song is not for you.”

Representatives for Kahan and the White House did not immediately respond to VarietyRequest for comments.

Kahan joins a growing list of artists who have spoken out against the White House for using their music on social media. Last weekend, Katy Perry criticized the administration for using her 2010 hit “Firework” in a TikTok post that included footage of military attacks. “I am deeply shocked and angry to see ‘Firework’ being used on the @WhiteHouse TikTok account as a backing track for video footage of military strikes,” she wrote on

In June, Ariana Grande shared similar sentiments after the White House used a cover of her 2024 song “Bye” in a TikTok post showing ICE agents arresting and handcuffing people. Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Celine Dion, Neil Young and the Rolling Stones have also criticized Trump for using their songs.
