A Singapore court has fined a French student S$600 ($465; £348) for licking a straw from an orange juice vending machine and replacing it in its dispenser.

Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, 19, pleaded guilty to one count of disorderly conduct.

Maximilien, who studies in Singapore, posted the video of himself licking the straw on Instagram with the caption “the city is not safe.”

Many online reacted with disgust to his video, which was reposted on a community page and picked up by local media outlets.

The company that owns the vending machine, iJooz, said it replaced all 500 straws in the machine’s dispenser after Maximilien’s hack.

Public nuisance offenders in Singapore face a fine of up to S$2,000, three months in jail or both.

Both the prosecution and the defense requested a fine for Maximilien.

Maximilien is “really sorry for causing all this trouble and realizes that what seemed perhaps funny to him at the time has turned out to be something very important,” a defense lawyer was quoted as saying by The Straits Times.

iJooz vending machines, which serve freshly squeezed orange juice for S$2 per cup, are a common sight in Singapore’s shopping districts, train stations and housing blocks.

Maximilien licked the straw of an iJooz machine at Goldhill Center on March 12, in one of the city-state’s most affluent neighborhoods, after a boxing workout, Channel News Asia reported.
