The film premiered in the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or for best film, the FIPRESCI Prize, the Ecumenical Jury Prize, the Prix de la Citoyenneté and the François Chalais Prize.
Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve star in the lead roles, with cinematography by Tudor Vladimir Panduru, editing by Mircea Olteanu, and production design by Simona Pădurețu.
“Fjord” is a co-production involving Romania, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland; it is produced by Mobra Films in co-production with Why Not Productions, Eye Eye Pictures, Film i Väst, Filmgate Films, Garagefilm International, Snowglobe, Aamu Film Company and France 3 Cinéma. The film was made with the support of the Romanian National Film Centre (CNC) and backed by Eurimages and the Creative Europe MEDIA Programme.
The film was released in France on Aug. 19, and is scheduled for release in Romania this winter. Goodfellas is the film’s international sales agent, while Neon Rated is handling distribution in the U.S.
The shortlist for the 2027 Oscar nominations will be announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Dec. 15, with the final selection announced on Jan. 21. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 14 in Los Angeles.
“Fjord” was already eligible to be submitted for consideration in the international feature film category due to a rule change by the Academy in May. There are now two ways to submit a film for consideration for the category. In addition to a film being submitted as an official selection by a country or region, a non-English language film can now be submitted for consideration by winning best film at a major film festival. Under this rule, the following films qualify: İlker Çatak’s “Yellow Letters” (Berlin), “Fjord” (Cannes), and Visar Morina’s “Shame and Money” (Sundance, World Cinema Grand Jury Prize). The other qualifying festivals are Venice, Toronto (Platform Award) and Busan.
