“X-Men ’97” is coming back. The animated Marvel series has been renewed for Season 3 on Disney+ and a first look at the new episodes has been revealed.
While at New York Comic Con, head of Marvel television, animation, comics and franchise Brad Winderbaum revealed a clip from Season 3, which opened with someone writing “Where are the X-Men?” in graffiti. We learn that the city has reached chaos as police have blocked off the city and closed the border, meaning the mutants can’t get across to Professor X’s school and have no place to stay unless they have letters of transit.
A young mutant starts to sneak across before she’s caught and deemed a threat. Just as she’s about to be captured, a team of mutants comes to rescue her.
“Are you the X-Men?” the girl asks them. “No, we’re the brotherhood,” they reply.
The clip also showed Storm and Professor X driving together and discussing the conflict they’re facing with the president of the U.S.. They exit the car and arrive at Gambit and Rogue’s wedding, where Deadpool and She-Hulk are among those in attendance.
Season 2 of “X-Men ’97” aired its finale on Aug. 12 after Season 1 debuted in 2024 and continued the story of the popular ’90s cartoon “X-Men: The Animated Series.” The Disney+ series revived the original series, which ran on Fox Kids from 1992-1997, and brought the animated X-Men to a new generation of fans after Disney acquired Fox.
The X-Men found themselves scattered across time in Season 2, which featured the evil, time-traveling villain Apocalypse as their new antagonist. In a climactic episode set in ancient Egypt, Prof. Charles Xavier and his heroes are unable to stop Apocalypse from killing Magneto, their perennial nemesis but occasional ally. They also battle against the government-sanctioned team X-Factor, which includes Magneto’s daughter Polaris, and X-Force, the rogue team led by Cyclops and Jean Grey’s son Cable (who’s also traveled back in time from the future).
After Season 1 broke fans’ hearts with the death of X-Men member Gambit, Season 2 resurrects the card-throwing hero as one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen. The undead hero initially turns agains the X-Men and serves Apocalypse, but Gambit’s lover Rogue is able to save him by harnessing the enormous power of a Celestial and offering to sacrifice herself. Rogue is successful and brings Gambit back to life, but in a twist, their X-Men pal Nightcrawler trades places with her and sacrifices himself to keep Rogue alive. The finale also revealed that the shape-shifting mutant Mystique killed X-Factor leader Valerie Cooper and assumed her identity, and Mystique’s non-mutant son Graydon Creed is elected president of the United States.
