Julia Garner will star in an Apple TV adaptation of Mikita Brottman’s true crime book “Guilty Creatures: Sex, God, and Murder in Tallahassee, Florida.” Variety has learned.
The series’ tagline states that it “delves into the psyche of a torrid romance and subsequent act of murder between two young, adulterous but God-fearing lovers, unraveling their complex lives and the emotional toll of living as murderers for 18 years.”
Craig Gillespie is directing and executive producing under his Fortunate Jack Productions banner. Sarah DeLappe (“Bodies Bodies Bodies,” “The Regime”) will write and executive produce. Stuart Zicherman will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Garner will executive produce through Alma Margo in addition to starring. Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements and Alissa Bachner will executive produce for Tomorrow Studios alongside Fortunate Jack and Brottman’s Annie Marter. ITV Studios partner Tomorrow Studios will produce. Both Fortunate Jack and Alma Margo have first-look deals with Apple.
Garner is best known for her role as Ruth Langmore on the hit Netflix series “Ozark,” for which she won three Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. She also received an Emmy nomination for the Netflix limited series “Inventing Anna,” playing convicted con artist Anna Delvey. Next, she will play Caroline Ellison in the Netflix limited series “The Altruists,” which charts the rise and fall of FTX. Garner’s other television credits include “The Get Down” and “Maniac,” as well as shows like “The Americans” and “Dirty John.” In film, Garner most recently played Silver Surfer in “Fantastic Four: First Steps” for Marvel and starred in Zach Cregger’s hit horror film “Weapons.”
Gillespie most recently directed the DC film “Supergirl.” He is also known for his work directing films such as “I, Tonya,” “Cruella,” “Dumb Money,” and “Lars and the Real Girl.” On television, he has directed episodes of shows such as “Your Friends and Neighbors” and Apple’s “Physical,” as well as “United States of Tara” and “Pam & Tommy,” the latter earning him an Emmy nomination. He and Marter founded Fortunate Jack in 2024.
Zicherman recently developed the first season of the FX series “American Sports Story.” He also worked on the Apple TV show “The Shrink Next Door” and has written for shows such as “The Americans,” “Sweetbitter” and “The Affair.”
