The UK and Ireland box office maintained a steady pace over the weekend, as Disney’s “Toy Story 5” held the number one spot for the third consecutive frame. The Pixar release grossed £5.7 million ($7.6 million), bringing its three-week cumulative total to £37.9 million ($50.7 million).
Universal secured second place with the circuit-wide release of “Minions & Monsters.” The film, which opened to saturation in more than 300 locations, generated a solid opening weekend of $5.8 million.
Black Bear’s ensemble comedy-drama “The Invite” opened in third place, playing in more than 300 venues and grossing an opening box office of $1.06 million. The performance narrowly edged out Warner Bros.’ The remnant of the superhero “Supergirl”, which moved into fourth place in its second session, pocketing £$1.05 million for a cumulative total of $6 million in 10 days.
Universal also controlled half of the chart with its holdovers. Horror romance “Obsession” ranked fifth in its eighth week of release with $661,785, raising its cumulative total to $23.4 million. Just behind at number six, Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller “Disclosure Day” grossed $653,153 in its fourth weekend, raising its total to $15.8 million.
Paramount’s “Jackass: Best and Last” moved into seventh place in its second frame, grossing $561,975 for a cumulative total of $2.3 million. A24’s psychological horror hit “Backrooms” followed at No. 8 in its sixth weekend of release, grossing $268,570 for a total of $16.9 million.
Yash Raj Films secured ninth place with its spy universe action film “Alpha,” with an opening weekend of $214,729. Paramount’s franchise spoof “Scary Movie” rounded out the top 10 in its fifth frame, adding $160,930 to its total, which now stands at $12.3 million.
Looking ahead, CinemaLive kicks off midweek on Wednesday 8 July with the performance of the opera “Aida On Sydney Harbor – Opera Australia 2015”. On Friday, Disney leads the broad circuit expansion with its live-action adaptation “Moana” launching in more than 300 locations, while Studiocanal launches its genre by offering “Evil Dead Burn” in wide retail spaces. Bakrania Media also grabs the targeted Bollywood screens on Friday with the comedy sequel “Dhamaal 4”.
Mubi releases Karim Aïnouz’s ensemble drama “Rosebush Pruning,” while Dartmouth Films releases Daniele Rugo’s medical documentary “Life Support” in more than 25 theaters. Bulldog Film Distribution releases Francesco Sossai’s Italian comedy “The Last One For The Road,” along with the release of documentary “Shoot The People” from Watermelon Pictures and “Letters From Baghdad” from Verve Pictures.
Repertory and archive bookings are led by BFI Distribution’s 4K restoration release of Sumitra Peries’ classic Sri Lankan drama “The Girls” (Gehenu Lamai), along with Park Circus reissuing Aardman’s classic animations “A Grand Day Out” and “The Wrong Pants” on select screens.
