On Tuesday night, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior Iranian figures flew to Iraq to participate in ceremonies honoring Khamenei.

The Iranian delegation was received upon arrival by Iraqi Prime Minister al-Zaidi, whose government declared Wednesday a holiday.

Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father, once again did not make an appearance. He has not been seen in public since he was reportedly seriously injured in the same Israeli airstrike in Tehran on February 28 that killed his father, his wife and several other members of his family.

Pezeshkian reportedly flew home to Tehran early Wednesday, after the United States and Iran traded attacks following attacks on several oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States blamed the attacks on Iran and said its forces in the region carried out strikes against dozens of Iranian military targets in retaliation. Iran said it responded by attacking US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he believed the three-week preliminary agreement between the United States and Iran to end the war was “over.”

Iran’s parliamentary speaker and chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, accused the United States of violating the deal and warned that the Iranians “won’t give in.”

The memorandum of understanding signed by Trump and Pezeshkian called for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a Gulf waterway through which 20% of the world’s oil and gas shipments pass, and gave them two months to reach a final deal covering Iran’s nuclear program, U.S. sanctions and a permanent truce.

Last week, mediator Qatar said Iranian and American negotiators made “positive progress” in indirect talks in Doha after a similar exchange of attacks, and that their next meeting would take place after the ceremonies for Khamenei conclude.
