Internet users are divided over Chipotle’s entry into Mexico.

“A bold move to sell Mexico a corporate version of Mexico,” said one X commenter.

Another X post questioned why Mexicans would pay for Chipotle when they have “perfectly good, healthy foods at their disposal.”

“It’s like Pizza Hut [opening a] location in Naples, it doesn’t make sense,” said another.

“Next, Panda Express will open its first branch in mainland China,” one post said, referring to the American chain that specializes in Chinese food.

The move could be a major test for Chipotle’s plans to expand globally, one wrote, while another suggested the chain could do well as a “tourism novelty.”

The company plans to open up to 370 new restaurants worldwide this year, including new locations in Singapore and South Korea.

Many commentators made comparisons to other American chains like Taco Bell that have attempted to enter countries from which their menus were inspired.

Taco Bell has twice unsuccessfully tried to establish itself in Mexico, despite being one of the largest fast food franchises in the world.

The chain moved out of the country in 2010 after failing to attract Mexican diners.

Domino’s Pizza closed its last locations in Italy, the birthplace of pizza, in 2022 after facing tough competition from local restaurants since opening there seven years earlier.
