Televisions are evolving one more time. This time, the new kid on the block is mini RGB, which emits red, green and blue lights through an LCD panel instead of just white or blue lights. According to Hisense, one of the first brands to introduce an RGB LED TV, the technology is an attempt to produce “pure colors directly at the source.”
The expected result is LED TVs with better colors, improved contrast and much higher brightness, all designed as a suitable alternative to OLED. However, whether this is a big step forward depends largely on the type of movies and shows you watch and your willingness to tweak some settings. I tested five new models to get an idea of what’s to come and determine which (if any) you should buy.

The first RGB TVs hit the market in 2025, but it is actually 2026 when the technology becomes more widely distributed in sizes and prices. As I said above, an RGB TV has conventional LED backlighting but uses a red, green and blue backlight module instead of the standard white or blue LEDs. But it’s not that simple. Samsung and LG call it “micro RGB”, while TCL and Hisense say “mini RGB”. The technology works more or less the same, even if micro RGB uses smaller LEDs. Sony uses the term “True RGB” and claims that there is no difference between mini RGB and micro RGB.
However, my goal in testing was to eliminate the marketing spin and simply put each model through a few benchmarks, watch the same movies, and stay glued to the World Cup no matter which model I was testing. The surprising discovery is that mini RGB (which is the term I’ll use for all of them) is remarkably vivid, has excellent contrast, and looks bright and clear even during the day. Mini RGB TVs are also great for off-angle viewing.
That said, I don’t think you need to put that OLED on Facebook Marketplace just yet. Mini RGB is an evolution in technology, but it also means manufacturers can continue using LCD panels. OLED was a game changer because individual pixels can emit color or turn off completely. In my side-by-side testing, mini RGB is a smart upgrade, but it’s not the ultimate display technology. While costs are comparable for now, I expect mini RGB TVs to drop in price soon.
Why choose a Mini RGB over other models?
The name mini RGB would imply that it is about color, specifically red, green and blue. However, the way the technology works by shining those colors through an LCD panel means there’s a lot more control over contrast and brightness as well.
In my testing, I found that the brightness, clarity, contrast, and picture mode settings had a much more obvious impact than on a regular LED or QLED. I compare it to a sports car. You can drive a BMW M5 on a side street at low speeds, but until you activate track mode, adjust the suspension, and make other adjustments, you won’t really know what the car can do. Mini RGB is similar in that it is highly customizable.
How much do RGB TVs really cost?
Anything new on the market will probably cost more than we might expect. While the Hisense UR9 RGB Mini-LED was the cheapest by far, at just $1,999 for the 65-inch model, all the other mini RGB and micro RGB cost closer to $4,000. That’s about $1,300 more than an OLED of the same size. Flagship OLED models from LG and Samsung tend to cost around $2,700 for a 65-inch one. The LED and QLED models are even cheaper, costing as little as $500.
How easy are they to assemble?
As with any modern television, mounting one on the wall is quite easy as there is plenty of information online on how to do it. I found YouTube videos that explain exactly what to do, and even cover how to install an electrical box. Mainly, you need to use a stud finder and make sure you mount the brackets to a stud and not just sheetrock, but even that process only takes a few minutes.
The only exception is if you opt for a larger mini RGB model like the TCL RM9L RGB-Mini LED. If the TV weighs more than 100 pounds, it changes the ball game in terms of using multiple studs and adding additional mounting brackets.
Best RGB TV overall
LG makes high-end TVs that tend to be a bit pricey, but are often worth the extra expense. The LG Micro RGB Evo is no different. Priced at $4,500 (that’s $500 off right now) for the 75-inch model I tested, this is an impressive and brilliantly colorful TV.
Setup and installation were simple. It’s just a matter of inserting the legs and screwing them well. My only complaint here was that the legs were a little pointy. For connectivity, the LG Micro RGB Evo features four HDMI 2.1 ports, one Ethernet port, one digital optical, one coaxial connection, and two USB 2.0 ports. WebOS is a capable streaming platform, although a little confusing and packed with too many apps and ads.
Movies and shows looked stunning and vivid on this TV, once I got used to changing the picture modes. By default, some of the stock settings (for example, Filmmaker mode) caused movies like Awake on Netflix they look too dark. Tron: Ares on Disney+ it was vivid with deep blacks and reds.
While the LG Micro RGB Evo worked perfectly well for console gaming, it had some issues with a gaming laptop. The variable refresh rate setting, which LG calls Motion Booster, didn’t work properly when I used an Alienware 16X Aurora laptop. However, with the native 165Hz refresh rate, this model is a game-changer.crimson desert It looked absolutely stunning.
