Just one day after Fox Sports’ coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals broke records, they did it again. Wednesday’s match between Argentina and England averaged 15.063 million viewers on Fox, making it the most-watched FIFA Men’s World Cup semi-final match in English-speaking history.
This surpassed Tuesday’s showdown between Spain and France, which averaged 11.462 million viewers and held the previous record (by one day).
The Argentina-England match ended with a last-minute victory for Argentina, who claimed a 2-1 victory and heads to Sunday’s final against Spain. The Argentina-England match, which took place in Atlanta, peaked with 22.177 million viewers between 4:45 and 5 pm ET.
It also represented Fox’s most-watched Wednesday afternoon television broadcast in Fox history. (Of course, Fox doesn’t normally broadcast in the afternoons, or at least hasn’t done so regularly since dropping Fox Kids in late 2001.)
Streaming was also up +131% compared to the 2022 FIFA World Cup Semifinals streaming average on Fox (6.531 million viewers).
The semi-final match looked likely for England, who scored in the 55th minute thanks to Anthony Gordon, with an assist from Morgan Rogers. But then, in the 87th minute, Argentine Enzo Fernández managed to pass, tying the match. Four minutes later, Lionel Messi passed to Lautaro Martínez, who put Argentina ahead 2-1.
That returned defending World Cup champions Argentina to the final, while England’s drought, which has not won since 1966, continues.
Prior to this week’s games, the previous most-watched FIFA Men’s World Cup semifinal broadcast in U.S. history in English was France-Morocco in 2022, when 6.595 million viewers watched it on Fox. Viewership for the match was also up 76% compared to the 2022 FIFA World Cup semifinal broadcast average on Fox (6.531 million viewers).
