X is taking a tougher stance against people who try to abuse its revenue-sharing program for creators by soliciting participation and stealing content from others.
It’s common for viral content to recirculate, especially on platforms like X, where that content can be rewarded with likes, followers, and in some cases, cash. Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit also address this issue and have implemented some technical measures to discourage such behavior; for example, tools that detect when a user has republished someone else’s work without giving credit.
X recently tried this as well, adding an improved video editor and recorder to its platform in an effort to encourage creators to publish using
Now, Nikita Bier said X’s newest version of the Grok AI model can detect duplicate content at three times the speed of its previous version. Additionally, adding watermarks, intros, and other edits intended to trick people into believing the stolen content is theirs will result in the monetized impressions being sent to the original user. This will also include copies of viral text posts. (Bier says the most common of these is: “Twitter is like the smoking section of the Internet,” proof that people still call the app Twitter!)
Bier said the company detected 1.5 million stolen posts in its last cycle, although he did not mention during which period that cycle took place.
However, he noted that with the changes, more than $1 million in payments will now be returned to the original creators of the stolen content.
Because many of these issues are made possible by AI, X has also been working to shut down bots more quickly. In April, Bier said the platform was identifying and suspending “208 bots per minute and growing.”
X now says that repeated or intentional attempts to circumvent its new policy will result in users being removed from the creator program, as will efforts to solicit engagement and followers. In terms of the latter, if a user is caught three or more times (for example, by saying something like “I will follow everyone who answers”), their account will be removed from the creator program and sent to the platform’s policy team for suspension.
Bier has complained about engagement baiting on the platform before, and even went after lead creator MrBeast for always using financial bait to get people to watch his videos.
