“Snoop,” an R-rated film about the life of Snoop Dogg, will hit theaters next summer.

Universal Pictures has scheduled the film for release on August 6, 2027. It is currently scheduled to be released alongside Disney’s “The Bluey Movie” and Black Bear’s “Jason Statham Stole My Bike.”

Universal describes “Snoop” as the “definitive biopic of the gangsta rap artist, mogul and icon.” Craig Brewer (“Song Sung Blue,” “Hustle & Flow”) directs the film, with “Outer Banks” star Jonathan Daviss in the lead role.

Although plot details have not been confirmed, “Snoop” will incorporate music from the singer’s vast catalog. The multi-hyphenate (emphasis on the multiple) Snoop has maintained his notoriety as a rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, producer, DJ, media personality and entrepreneur (including investments in technology and entertainment, and lifestyle, food and beverage, and cannabis brands). His debut came in 1992 when he appeared on Dr. Dre’s debut single, “Deep Cover,” and then on Dre’s landmark debut solo album, “The Chronic.”

“Snoop” is the first project under the studio’s overall deal with Death Row Pictures, the rapper’s content label. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, who worked on “8 Mile,” will produce alongside Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker.

Universal first announced the film in 2022, and Snoop shared at CinemaCon that production is expected to begin this summer.

“Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy make him one of the most interesting and influential icons in popular culture,” Donna Langley said when the project was announced. “We met with Snoop shortly after he acquired Death Row Records and had the opportunity to hear his story in his own words. We are honored to be able to create the lasting document of this singular artist.”
