Asked to bat first, Warwickshire lost three wickets for 58 in the opening powerplay. Brett Hutton dismissed Vaansh Jani caught behind and captain Rob Yates, who overcame a slow bounce to slide. James had trapped Zen Malik in the ravine.

On a tricky surface, Warwickshire stumbled to 121-6 after Kai Smith attacked seamer James, Alex Davies left-arm spinner Pocklington and Jake Lintott pulled off a reverse sweep.

But Garton and Bamber transformed the innings, and their position is a List A record seventh wicket for Warwickshire against Notts.

Garton came to life by smashing three fours off a delivery from rookie seamer Byron Hatton-Lowe. He lifted Farhan Ahmed’s spin over the long boundary and got James for two sixes, reaching three figures with his fourteenth, off 87 balls. While he has five half-centuries in first-class cricket, his previous best score in List A was 38.

Bamber, with a previous List A record of 21, hit seven fours before holing out at long range. Taz Ali fell earlier to Pocklington and Oli Hannon-Dalby departed for the penultimate ball of the scheduled overs after Garton, having suffered cramps after hitting Hatton-Lowe for his third six, was caught at long-on.

Slater twice needed on-field treatment for a muscle injury, but he and McCann gave the Outlaws a solid platform, before Slater was taken down by a rebound and spin when Yates caught him at the point.

Two wickets in his first seven balls from Lintott raised Warwickshire’s hopes of atoning for the defeat in their first outing against Northamptonshire two days ago, bowling McCann and Outlaws captain Haseeb Hameed.

After Ben Martindale had clipped Yates to a short third and Lyndon James had missed Lintott at mid-on, the Outlaws were 190-5, with 93 still needed.

But, with time still on their side, Verreynne and Pocklington kept their cool and added 82 off 86 balls before the latter departed for 31 off 45 balls. Ahmed also picked a fielder, but Hatton-Lowe hit the winning boundary with nine balls to spare.
