Former England fast bowler Katherine Sciver-Brunt has opened up about the challenges of mom guilt as she begins her coaching career.

Sciver-Brunt is married to England captain Nat, and the couple welcomed their son Theo in 2025.

After retiring in 2023, Katherine had her first child and, although she has since been involved in broadcasting the BBC Test Match Special, she is now taking her first steps in a new venture as assistant coach of Trent Rockets.

After the Rockets thrashed the Birmingham Phoenix in their opening game on Friday, Sciver-Brunt spoke honestly about juggling her personal ambitions with her role as a mother.

“I would love to be the head coach of a franchise one day,” Sciver-Brunt, 41, told Sky Sports.

“But I think being a mother, a working mother, the guilt is there. I feel guilty now, thinking about how they’re taking care of him, if I should be doing that.”

“I still have all that to figure out. It’s more about letting go and dealing with that feeling, and knowing that a better me is a better mother to him.”

It is difficult to find female head coaches in women’s football, especially English ones.

Former captain Charlotte Edwards now leads England, having previously been with Southern Brave, so Australia’s Lisa Keightley in MI London is the only one in this year’s Hundred.

With his wife playing for the Rockets, parenting duties can be shared in some ways, and while Sciver-Brunt said he absolutely wants to continue advancing in his career, he’s also aware of how much he can realistically take on.

“I’m trying to be better, happier and find my place in the world after being a professional athlete,” Sciver-Brunt added.

“I have a lot of passion for this, it’s only been four days but I loved it.

“I’d love to do a couple of franchises, because the role of county head coach just wouldn’t fit – as soon as I do something I want to do it to the best of my ability – almost too much!

“So I know I couldn’t dive into that and do it all year long, because I have to be a mother too. That’s the goal: to give him the best life possible and love him as much as I can, but I also want him to know who his mothers were and enjoy this game as well.”
