Christopher Nolan’s star-studded adaptation of “The Odyssey” has surpassed $600 million worldwide after just two weekends of release.

The big-budget version of Homer’s 3,000-year-old epic, directed by Matt Damon as Greek King Odysseus, has generated $639.6 million worldwide, including $353.2 million at the international box office and $284.4 million domestically. It’s an astonishing turnout for a nearly three-hour, R-rated sword-and-sandal adventure, underscoring the fact that Nolan is the most bankable director of his generation.

Over the weekend, “The Odyssey” generated $128.3 million in 81 foreign markets, a notable 10% decline in remaining territories. It’s the best second weekend ever for a film whose opening surpassed $100 million, according to Universal, which backed the film with a $250 million budget. “The Odyssey” has already surpassed the international gross of this spring’s hit “Project Hail Mary” ($340 million) and now ranks among the five highest-grossing Hollywood releases of the year, and that’s before it opens in major foreign markets, including China, Japan and Korea. The highest-earning territories to date include the United Kingdom and Ireland with $46.3 million, France with $31.8 million, Italy with $28.8 million, Australia with $20.6 million and Germany with $20.4 million.

Imax has contributed an incredible $140 million in worldwide ticket sales for “The Odyssey,” which is notable for being the first feature film shot entirely with Imax cameras. It is the second-fastest title in the company’s history to surpass $100 million, after 2019’s juggernaut “Avengers: Endgame,” and Nolan’s epic took just 10 days to reach the mark.

In its second weekend of release, “The Odyssey” racked up $24 million internationally and $38 million worldwide in Imax, ranking as the company’s biggest sophomore opening in history. Imax’s coveted 70mm screens, Nolan’s preferred format, accounted for $5.2 million over the weekend on just 41 screens worldwide. The small but mighty 70mm imprint has generated $16.9 million to date, representing 12.1% of the total Imax box office. Since there are so few of those screens around the world, most of those schedules are sold out through September.

“Chris has created the kind of masterpiece that entices our oldest fans to experience it two or three times, while introducing Imax to entirely new fans,” says Imax CEO Richard Gelfond. “We are just beginning to see the impact this will have on our brand and business.”

In other global box office milestones, Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” surpassed $1 billion and ranks as the highest-grossing film of 2026 with $1.02 billion. It is the third release of the year, following “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” ($1.001 billion) and “Michael” ($1.001 billion), to cross the coveted box office benchmark. “The Odyssey”, as well as next weekend. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is basically guaranteed to join that elusive company.
