Hampshire recalled Eddie Jack and Lumsden, both unused in The Hundred franchise tournament, while Glamorgan gave a debut to 17-year-old Harry Wallace, son of former club captain Mark, and brought back Ingram for his first tournament game since the 2024 final win.

Home skipper Nick Gubbins chose to bat, but he and Ali Orr went cheaply to Douthwaite and Ul Hassan to leave the hosts 18-2.

Albert and Lehmann soon had the scoreboard moving with the first of two major stands, adding 78 at a run a ball against a raw teenage attack.

But Albert was smartly stumped for 46 by Alex Horton, charging at part-time off-spinner Hope-Bell, who then bowled Tom Prest reverse-sweeping.

Brown, dropped at square leg, went on to add 70 with Lehmann to put the home side on top.

But no-one could quite go on as Lehmann was run out by Eddie Byrom and Brown bowled by visitors’ captain Andy Gorvin, either side of Ul Hassan yorking Indian all-rounder Ashutosh Sharma for seven.

Then useful tail-end runs came from Andrew Neal (23), Jack (19) and Abbott (19) to give Hampshire a defendable total, with wickets from Tom Edwards and Douthwaite curtailing the innings.

Glamorgan got to 24-0 before Abbott took control, his speed proving too much for Byrom (14), Ul Hassan (11) and Wallace (three) in the space of seven deliveries as they crashed to 30-3.

Hope-Bell (21) started well but slashed Lumsden to point leaving all the responsibility on Ingram, who had been off the field earlier with a hand injury and started cautiously as if he knew the burden on him.

Jack’s second spell saw Ingram top-edge Jack to square leg for 24 and Horton trapped lbw second ball to strengthen Hampshire’s grip.

Callum Nicholls and Douthwaite put together Glamorgan’s only half-century stand before Douthwaite (28) was caught in the deep off Sharma.

Nicholls was bowled cutting at Lumsden to end any realistic hopes as Hampshire supporters relaxed in the evening sunshine, and the teenager had Gorvin caught for 20 to earn personal best bowling figures.
