The Hurtta Expedition Parka, our top pick among the dozen dog winter coats we tested, is discontinued to make way for an upgraded version from the brand. This is notable because you can find it in several sizes at Chewy for as low as $34, 60% off its usual $84 price. On top of that, you can get a $25 eGift card deal if your total purchase of eligible items is $100 or more.

If you live somewhere with freezing winters, this is an unusually good deal on a high-performing dog coat that should last you years. The coat’s full-coverage, insulated design retained heat better than the competition. It also kept our reporter’s dog completely dry during wet Pacific Northwest walks.

I can’t think of a reason to spend more on a different coat if you can find your dog’s size in the Expedition Parka. This all-time low price for the best dog winter coat is only a few dollars more than our no-frills budget pick from Petrageous Designs and far less than most of our recommendations, which often run over $100. The newer Expedition Parka II, which we’re about to begin testing, is $85 to $127, depending on size, and is unlikely to go on sale anytime soon.

Why we love the Hurtta Expedition Parka

The Expedition Parka offers the most warmth and weatherproofing of any winter coat we tested. This coat was designed by dog-wear pros based in Finland, and they’ve been at it since the 1970s. It’s a full-coverage coat that has a polyester fleece lining and a fully waterproof shell. Thanks to these features, the coat rose to the top of our heat-retention test rankings and kept our test pup, Roo, warm and dry during a rainy 45-minute walk.

It comes in a wide range of sizes and has multiple adjustment points, so you can achieve a good fit. There are two drawstrings at the collar, a drawstring for the back length, and a strap around the waist. That said, the neck opening is pretty big, even with the drawstrings tightened, so our reporter rolled it down for her dog. What stands out most is that this coat has an extensive size range, including options for breeds with broad or narrow chests.

It’s super durable without compromising comfort. The shell is tough, and the hardware sturdy. These materials make the jacket a little heavy, but our test dog moved freely, running and jumping without limitations. It was easy to wipe clean after messy adventures, and it came out of the washing machine completely clean and undamaged.

Thoughtful extra features like a leash hole and reflective strips enhance safety and security. The two smallest sizes include a built-in harness, while larger options have a weatherproof hole that allows you to attach a leash to a harness worn underneath. Reflective strips lining the top and bottom help keep dogs visible on dark winter mornings and evenings.
