SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers for the ninth episode of “Dutton Ranch,” “The Godfather.”,” which is now streaming on Paramount+.

The season finale of “Dutton Ranch” ends with a bang when Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) is shot to death outside his home. Although we didn’t see the trigger pulled, it seems likely that the gunman was his adoptive brother Joaquín (Juan Pablo Raba), who was instructed by his father, Mariano (Raoul Max Trujillo), to carry out the murder to regain control of Rancho 10 Pétalos.

The murder sends Rob-Will’s daughter Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind) and her mother, 10 Petal matriarch Beulah (Annette Bening), into hysterics and will obviously be a crucial chess piece as Rip (Cole Hauser) and Beth (Kelly Reilly) work to get Carter (Finn Little) back from the Mexican cartel.

But in a post-finale interview with Raba, the actor revealed that he’s not convinced that Joaquín was the one who really pulled the trigger.

“Let me ask you a question: Do you you Do you think Joaquin killed Rob-Will? question during the interview. “I mean, here’s the deal, and I’m not being cheeky here. I don’t think I did it! I really don’t. If you follow the timeline of the scene, you can watch it again, but Rob-Will says “Goodbye” to Oreana. 15 or 20 seconds later a gunshot is heard and there’s no cut. Whoever did it, literally: Ding-dong, door opens, shoots the guy.. Are you telling me that Joaquín did that? He’s not drunk. He’s not on drugs. And why? Because a boy, his father, who he honestly has to hate in so many ways, asked? “I think there are a lot of questions to be answered.”

Raba says this season’s arc completely transformed Joaquín and how he played him.

“He’s completely out of his element,” he says. “This guy’s not a cowboy. This guy’s not a killer. This guy, for God’s sake, is a college kid! His most prized possession is his A&M ring. His education, that’s the one thing no one’s going to take away from him. Now, all of a sudden, they put a gun to his head; now that he’s dealing with killers, he’s got to call his dad. He doesn’t want to be like his dad. He wants to be a Texas rancher. He could’ve made it. I called 20 years ago, “But he didn’t want to. So everything that starts happening to him is very strange and he no longer acts like he can control things. He’s really scared.”

As for the next season, Raba says he doesn’t know what to expect, but he’s eager to see what new challenges Joaquín faces.

“I’m dying to get a new script and hopefully be in it,” Raba says. “Here’s the deal: I think one of the most interesting things about any Taylor Sheridan-related universe is that there are no good guys or bad guys. It’s circumstances that end up shaping the characters. Could you say at this point that Rip or Beth are completely good characters? You root for them, right? So my question now with Joaquin is, ‘Where does it go from here?’ I’ve played bad guys, and all those bad guys came from very common places: money, drugs, power, revenge. I’ve never played a bad guy, or a guy in general, who comes from heartbreak.

“I think Joaquín’s anguish is what motivated that phone call,” he continues. “What eventually changes everything, the lives of everyone around you, is heartbreak. It’s from not belonging. It’s from telling people, ‘Hey, Mom, I did everything right. Your real son is a real Damn, but I did everything right. I went to college, got my degree. I’ve cleaned up your shit for years and years. I don’t even have a family of my own. And you’re not going to give me this? What is it, my blood? Is it my color? Is it my culture?’ I feel like that translates very well to this particular historical moment that we are experiencing, not only in the United States, but in the world. Why don’t you love me? I haven’t done anything wrong. I think it is an incredible motivation for what lies ahead for Joaquín in a possible another season. “I think it is a beautiful place to work.”
