More than a thousand protesters marched on July 8 near the site where an ICE officer shot and killed a man on his way to work.

Protesters echoed growing demands for an independent investigation into the Tuesday shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, a Mexican national who lived in the United States as an undocumented immigrant for decades.

The BBC’s reporting partner CBSNews said Salgado Araujo had no criminal convictions, according to his family and a Texas congresswoman.

CBS also reported that the Department of Homeland Security said Salgado Araujo was shot after he ignored commands and attempted to ram an officer who fired his weapon in self-defense.

Federal officials did not release video or images of the shooting or damage to the vehicles.

The nighttime demonstration began with a few hundred people gathering at the site where Salgado was shot in Houston’s working-class, predominantly Hispanic East End. The crowd swelled to more than 1,000 as protesters marched to a nearby park.
