The suspect wasn’t even sure what model of gun he had used, according to messages with his roommate.

“I don’t entirely know what the gun was, because it was old… and Grandpa made some modifications,” he wrote.

Twiggs testified that Robinson had asked weeks earlier about using an engraving tool before an upcoming hunting and camping trip with his family.

However, after the shooting, he texted Twiggs: “Do you remember how I was recording bullets?”

He said the messages were “mostly one big meme.”

The court this week saw photographs of bullets and inscribed casings found at both the crime scene and at Robinson’s residence, with messages such as “Hey fascist! Get it!”

Robinson eventually gave up trying to recover the rifle, texted Twiggs and returned to his home in St George.

Authorities discovered the firearm, authorities testified this week, and found DNA matching Robinson on both the rifle and a towel in which it was wrapped.

Meanwhile, Robinson was nervous and remorseful in the apartment he shared with his roommate the day after the shooting, Twiggs said in the taped interview.

“He started crying a little bit and said he wished he hadn’t and then he just kept wandering around and doing things, I think to keep himself busy or distracted or something,” Twiggs said.

The hearing included lengthy debates over the admissibility of the evidence, with media lawyers and Kirk’s representatives arguing passionately for everything to be shown publicly or at least in the courtroom.

Robinson told his roommate the day after the murder that he intended to turn himself in, Twiggs said.

Court heard how the suspect arrived at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office the day after the shooting, accompanied by his parents and a family friend.

Prosecutors played silent footage of him that night, wearing a maroon shirt, dark hat, jeans and Converse shoes, and he was transported back to Utah County and formally booked on Sept. 12.

This week, Robinson appeared in court clean-shaven and dressed in light-colored suits. His parents and two brothers were also there.

The US president’s son, Donald Trump Jr, and his wife were also in court.

Both sides must now submit extensive briefs and Judge Graf set the next hearing date for September 1.

The Kirk family issued a statement shortly after court adjourned.

The family wrote: “Nothing can undo the loss of our beloved Charlie.

“As this case moves into its next phase, we pray that the truth continues to be heard through a process that is fair, transparent and fact-based.”
