On Tuesday, Microsoft fixed an all-time high number of security bugs across its product lines, largely due to using AI to help the company and outside researchers discover bugs.

Among the vulnerabilities fixed was one for the remastered version of the classic 25-year-old war strategy video game Age of Empires II. According to security researchers, the flaw allowed hackers to take over the victim’s computer by sending a personalized invitation to a malicious game.

A video posted on X shows how hackers could exploit the flaw.

According to cybersecurity firm Rapid7, a successful attack would have allowed hackers to place malicious files on the victim’s computer, opening the door for the hacker to gain the ability to execute malicious code on the victim’s machine.

That means that, effectively, the hacker could have taken control of the hacked computer.

There is no evidence that hackers have successfully exploited this bug in the wild. But targeting video games can be an effective way to install malware on large numbers of victims’ computers and steal their passwords, for example.
