Leicestershire have signed batsman Sheridon Gumbs on a three-and-a-half-year deal after impressing during a one-month deal with the East Midlands side.

The 22-year-old former England Under-19 international spent 18 months with the Foxes’ second XI before being given a one-month contract and promoted to make his County Championship debut in June.

Gumbs, who came through the youth ranks at Surrey, where he made four One-Day Cup appearances in 2022, made 49 in his second innings on his first-class debut for Leicestershire against Essex.

He then featured in the Foxes’ historic win, their first in the top flight in 8,318 days, against Yorkshire later that month.

Gumbs appeared in the T20 Blast for the first time in early July and is now under contract which will run until the end of the 2029 season.

“It’s the best news I could have received,” Gumbs told BBC Sport of his long-term contract.

“It’s a huge weight off my shoulders and it allows me to come in and be a better version of myself. I’m getting used to the environment and the guys, and it’s been amazing.”

Leicestershire director of cricket Claude Henderson described Gumbs as a player with “enormous potential”.
