Elijahturner011 had a simple question: “Can someone please hand me a ticket?”

“I’ve been trying to get a ticket forever. I’ve been scammed everywhere,” they wrote on July 20 in the Reddit post that followed. “I just want a ticket for 70mm…it hurts my heart that I can’t get a ticket for one day, and I heard that some people didn’t even go to see the movie. So please, if you’re not sure or don’t plan on going, let me have your ticket, please. I’m calling Zeus himself.”

This is just one of the desperate posts from dozens of film buffs that have appeared on the r/NYCmovies subreddit, a place dedicated to discussing “cinema in New York City: AMC, Regal, Film Forum, IFC Center, Film at Lincoln Center, NY Film Festival, and more.” And although not everyone names the film, it is clear what the treasure they long for is: a ticket to see “The Odyssey” in Imax 70mm.

While some New York City moviegoers are lucky enough to experience Nolan’s film in their preferred format, screenings are selling out at an unprecedented rate. Wheelchair-friendly spots are all that remain for showing times at AMC Lincoln Square 13, one of 41 70mm Imax screens worldwide and the only one in New York City.

The sold-out Lincoln Square Imax 70mm screenings include all 2 a.m. showings, which continue through August 2, and all other times listed, which run through August 12. An AMC spokesperson declined to comment when asked if more showtimes would be added soon.

On the front page of r/NYCmovies, there is a rule clearly listed: No ticket speculation. And yet, dozens of intruders have passed through the page to try to achieve a miracle, or even have more nefarious plans to scam moviegoers.

Tessa, one of the page’s mods who has been working to protect readers, says Variety That the community has also been working to keep resellers and scammers at bay. But it’s complicated, given the anonymity that Reddit can afford.

“People are quick to report if someone tries to sell them tickets above their face (resale) value,” he says. “Whenever we receive a report of someone doing that, we ban their account. However, often these resellers, once they are discovered, delete their own accounts and create new ones. Therefore, it can be difficult to completely ban them successfully. There are also users who actively offer to pay above the face value (which other users will also report). I am sure that there are some users who silently and willingly pay above the face value. The worst thing is that users pretend to have tickets that they do not have in mind. Absolutely. Once again, once informed, we ban, but “Often we simply create new accounts. We warn people to be careful and check the posting history, obtain proof of the tickets, if possible make an exchange in person (if they print the ticket at a kiosk, they will know that they have a legitimate ticket that can no longer be sold or refunded twice), and, if they make an online transaction, activate PayPal’s goods and services protection feature.

Although the Reddit community takes care of itself, there are many other places where resellers can attack. $33 tickets have bids starting at $69 for the Lincoln Square screenings on eBay, up to $1,200 for a pair of seats on July 22.

Maybe a better idea for New Yorkers? Head upstate to Cinemark Tinseltown Rochester, a six-hour drive from downtown where tickets are available for show times. this week in Imax 70mm. After all, it can’t take as long to get there as it took Odysseus to return to Ithaca.
