Sunrisers Leeds opened the new era of The Hundred with a dominant seven-wicket victory over MI London at The Oval.

After a superb bowling performance restricted MI London to 107-8, the Sunrisers achieved their goal with 31 balls to spare.

Australian batsman Phoebe Litchfield was the top scorer with a fluid 43 off 26 balls, while her compatriot Annabel Sutherland finished unbeaten with 30 off 23.

Despite a brilliant performance, the Sunrisers were concerned as experienced player Kate Cross suffered a shoulder injury while diving onto the field and had to be taken off by the physiotherapist.

It was confirmed that it had not been dislocated, but that a scan would be carried out to determine the extent of the damage.

That left England all-rounder Dani Gibson, who was named Sunrisers captain after being chosen as the most expensive women’s player at the auction, in a bowler’s light, but the rest of the attack effectively stepped up.

Indian player Deepti Sharma claimed key wickets from MI London openers Hayley Matthews and Danni Wyatt-Hodge after making a positive start to reach 56-0.

From there the home team stagnated and the Sunrisers destroyed regular wickets including Gibson’s 2-17 and leg-spinner Hannah Baker took 2-16.
