Matthews, a maritime historian and explorer, first became interested in the crash in 2019, after reading about a luggage tag from the flight that had arrived off the coast of Florida.

He then began to reconstruct the plane’s final moments using reports from the Civil Aeronautics Board, predecessor of the US Federal Aviation Administration.
