England are looking for a new Test skipper after the retirement of Ben Stokes and Stokes gave his “100%” backing for Brook to become his successor.
Brook told BBC Sport: “I don’t think you can turn down being England Test captain.
“It would be an honor and a privilege to be the captain of the event, the pinnacle of our sport.
“It’s not up to me to make that decision. It’s up to people far above me. I would be happy to do it if they asked me to.”
Brook, 27, was named England white-ball captain last year and was promoted to vice-captain to Stokes in the Test team for last winter’s Ashes tour.
As Stokes’ deputy, he is an obvious candidate to become the 83rd man to lead England in Test cricket, with Stokes’ predecessor Joe Root perhaps the only alternative.
But Brook already has a heavy workload as one of England’s multi-format players, whose demands are highlighted by the shift from the Test series against New Zealand that ended on Monday to a five-match T20 series against India that begins at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday.
The busy schedule meant Brook only met for the first time in training on Tuesday with all-rounder James Coles, who received his first call-up to an England team.
The last man to simultaneously lead England in all three formats was Andrew Strauss, in 2009. Strauss’ spell in charge of the T20 team lasted one match.
When asked if it is possible to captain three formats, Brook replied: “I think it’s possible. I’m not saying it would be easy, but I definitely think it’s possible.”
“The fact that I don’t play franchise cricket means that there are periods in my calendar when I wouldn’t play cricket.
“I would focus on my fitness and prepare to play all three formats, which has been a dream of mine since I could talk or walk. Whether or not I captain England in Test cricket, I would be happy to continue playing for England.”
England XI for the first T20 against India on Wednesday: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, Harry Brook (captain), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Adil Rashid, Luke Wood, Saqib Mahmood.
