The United States launched a new wave of attacks on Iran for the sixth consecutive night, its military says, as the two sides continue to fight for control of the Strait of Hormuz.

The US Central Command (Centcom) said on Thursday that the strikes were aimed at “further degrading Iranian military capabilities.”

Iranian state media reported that US missiles hit near the Gulf island of Qeshm, near the Strait of Hormuz, as well as Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, the site of a nuclear power plant.

It comes after the two sides traded attacks overnight, with renewed hostilities further affecting their preliminary agreement to end the war.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday that US President Donald Trump remains open to talks with Iran.

“The president will hold them accountable when they turn their back on the words they have said to the United States. But at the same time he is always open to diplomacy,” he told reporters.

He said Iran has expressed that it still wants to reach a deal with the United States, adding: “We are talking to them, but again, the president will not allow them to fire on ships in the strait without paying a consequence for it.”

As attacks increase, the Strait of Hormuz – a critical waterway off the coast of Iran that Tehran effectively blocked in response to attacks from the United States and Israel – has remained closed.

Earlier on Thursday, Tehran said it had attacked US military bases in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain, while the United States said it had inflicted a six-hour wave of attacks on multiple locations in the strait.

Those exchanges came after Trump warned Iran that it “had better behave” or face further military action if Iran did not return to negotiations.

Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, told state media that Tehran had “no reason” to abide by any deal that did not benefit the country.

He added that Iran’s national security depended on maintaining what he described as “Iranian agreements” in the Strait of Hormuz.
