It looks like Jersey will have to go through an extra round of qualifying if they want to make it to the 2028 T20 World Cup.

The International Cricket Council is planning to introduce a Global Qualifier to follow its regional qualifying tournaments.

Jersey won the European Sub-Regional Qualifier A in May, taking them into what was to be the final round of European qualifying next summer alongside Italy, Scotland, the Netherlands, Denmark and one other team.

But under the new plans, teams that made it to the last T20 World Cup but did not gain automatic qualification for 2028 will play in the Global Qualifier.

Last year, Jersey missed out on a place in the 2026 tournament on net run rate after beating Scotland to finish third behind Italy and the Netherlands.

The change means Jersey will now face Scotland, Denmark and one other team, with the top two teams advancing to the Global Qualifier.

In that tournament, teams will continue to qualify based on placement, with the top teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas and the East Asia-Pacific region advancing along with the next three highest-ranked teams.

The new format has been approved by the ICC Board and will undergo final scrutiny by the governing body’s Business and Financial Affairs Committee in November.
