Ben Stokes defied severe cramps to hit the headlines once again with a typically brave century on his return to competitive action for the first time since retiring from Test cricket three weeks ago. Helped Durham beat Derbyshire in the One-Day Cup.

The all-rounder was playing his first List A match for his county in almost 12 years and showed all his trademark grit as he battled through repeated attacks of cramps (collapsing in pain as he reached fifty) to drag his team to their target of 257 with a superb knock of 108 not out.

Earlier, Stokes ran out wicketless bowling nine overs as Derbyshire’s Martin Andersson’s well-timed century formed the backbone of the Falcons’ 256-9 lead.

Ben Aitchison’s first two wickets set Durham back, but Stokes got good support from Will Rhodes (45), Colin Ackermann and Ollie Robinson, as he limped past three figures to complete an impressive domestic comeback and seal a five-wicket victory.
