England reached the highest one-day international total at Lord’s to beat India by 27 runs and seal a thrilling 2-1 series victory.

Opener Ben Duckett achieved the highest men’s individual ODI score at the Home of Cricket by hitting 141 off 135 balls as the hosts scored 383-7, surpassing England’s previous mark of 334-4 against the same opponents in 1975.

Duckett shared an opening stand of 192 with Jacob Bethell, who fell for 91, before finally taking a return catch to Prince Yadav in the 44th over after hitting 18 fours and a six.

Joe Root helped lead England to their formidable total, hitting an unbeaten 74 off 48 balls for his sixth consecutive score of 50 or more in ODIs, while Jos Buttler added an unbeaten 41 off 13 deliveries in the end.

Asked to hit what would have been the second-highest winning target in the history of the format, India stayed in the hunt deep in the game thanks to Rohit Sharma’s magnificent 138.

The 39-year-old, who is rumored to retire at the end of the series, was in brilliant form, hitting 17 fours and five sixes in his 111-ball knock.

He put up his own stand of 147 with Shubman Gill, who scored 77 before Adil Rashid caught him lbw.

Rohit’s dismissal in the 38th over, bowled around his legs by Bethell, was the decisive moment of the match, leaving Virat Kohli to try and steer India to victory as the required run rate soared.

Kohli saw the rest of India’s middle order dismissed cheaply, and then himself was caught in the sheets off Sam Curran’s bowling for 74, effectively ending the tourists’ challenge.

India’s tail kept hitting boundaries but their target was too big and they finished at 360-7.
