Will Jacks made his first half-century in this year’s edition of The Hundred to help MI London to a heartbreaking last-ball victory over Southern Brave.

Jacks hit three fours and two sixes in his 41-ball knock of 54 to provide the backbone of MI’s chase of 130 off a tough pitch at Southampton.

At 93-3 and with England all-rounder Jacks in good touch, MI looked set for a comfortable victory only to lose four wickets in 34 runs.

The momentum passed to Brave when Jacks was caught lbw off a crushing yorker from Marcus Stoinis, who had earlier removed MI captain James Vince and Nicholas Pooran for ducks in consecutive deliveries.

Sherfane Rutherford’s 12-ball 21 spun the visitors only for a thrilling finish when he and Rashid Khan ran out as Nikhil Chaudhary bowled Tom Curran.

With two runs needed from the final delivery of the match, bowled by Chaudhary, Ollie Pope managed to break through the point and pull back for a second.

Brave had earlier posted 129-9 thanks to a 26-ball 49 from England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith at the top of the order.

Smith smashed six fours and two sixes before hitting a slower ball from veteran seamer Richard Gleeson to long-on.

Tristan Stubbs added 38 off 31 balls, while Chaudhary scored 13, but they were the only other Brave players to score in double figures.

Wickets were shared around MI’s attack with Kiwi left-arm seamer Trent Boult the pick with 2-15, while Tom Curran, Sam Curran and Gleeson also claimed two each.

MI are third in the standings with eight points, level with leaders Manchester Super Giants and second-placed Welsh Fire, who have played one more game, while Brave are second from bottom having lost their first three games.
