Universal’s “Minions & Monsters” debuted at No. 1 at the Chinese box office during the July 3-5 weekend, grossing RMB 111.5 million ($16.4 million), according to data from Artisan Gateway.

Taopiaopiao’s sci-fi comedy “Keep Real” opened in second place, grossing $10.5 million over the weekend. Including early trailers, the film has reached a cumulative total of $11 million since its release. Written and directed by Xing Wenxiong, the satirical story stars Bai Jingting as Superman Wang Changhai, a superhero who is sent back to his hometown to form a combat squad. Faced with a city where long-term peace has spawned complex interpersonal networks and deep-rooted social courtesies, the naive hero must navigate local high-stakes etiquette and learn to develop his emotional intelligence with the help of a local branch manager played by Wei Xiang.

Bona Film Group’s historical war epic “Crossing” moved into third place in its second weekend of release, grossing $6.4 million. The large-scale military drama, which commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Long March under the direction of Xu Zhanxiong, has amassed a total of $27.6 million.

A24’s “Backrooms” took fourth place with $4.7 million. The film has reached a cumulative total of $14.5 million.

Rounding out the top five, Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” grossed $3.1 million in its third weekend. The film has raised its cumulative box office collection in China to $36.9 million.

Mainland China’s overall weekend gross revenue reached $47.8 million, while year-to-date revenue in 2026 is $2.61 billion, down 40.3% from the same period in 2025.
