GUNNISON, Colorado.- A plane helping fight a wildfire in Colorado crashed into a reservoir, killing the pilot, authorities said.

The plane reportedly went down Sunday in Silver Jack Reservoir and divers recovered the pilot’s body, the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office posted online.

The pilot, believed to be the only person on board, was assisting firefighters with the two-week-old Gold Mountain Fire, which has grown to about 57 square miles (148 square kilometers) in southwestern Colorado. It was 13% contained early Monday.

An email was sent to the Federal Aviation Administration requesting more information about the crash.

Last week, Colorado wildland firefighters gathered to honor three of their own who died after being trapped by flames on the Colorado-Utah border.

Many large fires continue to rage in the West. They are scattered across Colorado, Utah and New Mexico, while wildfires are burning in eight other states, from Alaska to Arizona.

Prolonged hot and dry conditions this week will raise concerns about fire weather, the National Weather Service said.
