A UK government spokesman said: “This is a matter for the French authorities.”
French authorities said the public service patrol vessel Flamant had carried out a pistol shooting exercise off the coast of Cap de Gris-Nez.
A spokesperson said: “To maintain their high level of operability in the current international context, French Navy units train regularly.
“Individual combatant training is part of the normal activity of a ship in operations.
“The regulatory signals provided for by international standards for this shooting exercise were carried out and the safety gauge was respected.
“This exercise has no relation to the presence of a British ship in the area, which was out of range of fire.
“The PSP Flamant did not participate in any surveillance operation of the migrant boats.”
Earlier this month, a Russian warship, followed by a Royal Navy vessel, carried out a live-fire artillery exercise just 46 miles (74 kilometers) south of Plymouth.
