Since World War I, the United States has advanced its clocks during the summer to have more daylight in the afternoon and conserve electricity. The time change is known as daylight saving time (DST). The clocks go back in the fall each year and then follow standard time.

Daylight saving time, which also helped conserve fuel during World War I, was unpopular with farmers and was repealed after the war. It returned during World War II, and legislation was passed in 1966 standardizing clock changing across the country, although some states, including Hawaii and Arizona, and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, have opted out.
