The United States does it its way. First it was hydration breaks, now it’s an 11-minute halftime show and a 30-minute mid-game break to complete its Super Bowl as the world’s largest sporting event.

For all the controversy, there have been precedents: at the 2024 Copa América final between Argentina and Colombia in Miami, Shakira performed during a break that lasted 25 minutes, and at last year’s Club World Cup final between Chelsea and PSG, Coldplay played with J Balvin, Doja Cat and Tems in a hilariously empty MetLife Stadium (after all, people still need to pee) for the same duration. PSG had already conceded three goals much earlier, so it wasn’t Coldplay’s fault.

Coldplay takes the helm again here, with Chris Martin curating a lineup that includes Madonna, BTS, Justin Bieber, director Gustavo Dudamel, and a choir of elementary school children. We will also have a repeat performance of dai daithe World Cup anthem by Shakira and Burna Boy, who already performed the song at the opening ceremony about nine months ago.

For players who want to get back on the field, the 30-minute interruption could be a distraction (I can imagine Marc Cucurella tearing his hair out in the locker room). For the rest of us, enjoy your extremely long bathroom break.
