The parents of an Australian woman hiking through Nepal and around the region impacted by the tragic flooding have confirmed their daughter is alive.
A majority of the 43 Australians still missing after the devastating flash flooding in Nepal and Tibet were pilgrims on a journey to one of the most spiritually significant locations in the world.
Through both overtly religious travel groups, or traditional groups offering pilgrimage packages, they were seeking to trek to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar as part of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, where they cross into Tibet from Nepal.
Families across the country are reeling in the aftermath of the disaster, as the number of Australians reported missing rises and loved ones at home hold out hope for any good news.
Assistant Foreign Minister Matt Thistlethwaite on Monday said 43 Australians are now missing – up from 35 signalled on Thursday, later reported as 42. The latest missing person has not yet been identified. They are among more than 3000 people still missing. At least 800 people have been confirmed killed by the disaster.
The new figure does not include Cara Severino, 26, whose parents confirmed she had made contact and was alive but stranded along the Langtang Trek.
Fifteen of the missing Australians were travelling with the Himalayan Glacier Adventure and Travel Kailash Group, six others were travelling with the Kailash Journeys tour group, and 11 were on a pilgrimage with non-profit spiritual organisation the Isha Foundation. The whereabouts of one traveller with Kathmandu Holiday Tours and Travel, and six other Australian travellers remain unknown.
Indian-Australian community leader Vasan Srinivasan said the other 14 missing Australians from the Himalayan Glacier pilgrimage were Sydney-based members of a cultural and religious non-profit he founded called the Australia Bharatha Brahman Samajam.
“We are all very distressed and trying to track them. I’m just praying.” He said those missing worked in various professions, including the financial industry, and many were his close professional friends.
Renee Therese Spry, 51
Queensland woman Renee Spry was returning from a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet when disaster struck, and was last seen at the Gyirong Port border crossing into Nepal.
Renee’s sister Clair said the missing Australian’s partner Shaun and their two daughters intended to travel to the region, as they work to track down Renee.
“We continue to pray for her, the Nepalese people and those also still to return to the safety their homes and families,” Clair said.
Karan Bhardwaj, 40, Arpan Kothari, 40, Bhavin Raval,41
The family of Royal Australian Air Force member Karan Bhardwaj is pleading for information after losing contact with the Brisbane father, who was travelling with tour group Kailash Journeys when the flash floods hit.
Bhardwaj was travelling with friends Arpan Kothari, 40, and Bhavin Raval, 41. The Brisbane-based trio has not been heard from since. They are among six Australians currently missing from the Kailash Journeys tour group.
“Karan is a dad to my beautiful seven-year-old nephew, as well as a brother, uncle and brother-in-law,” wrote his family member Jen, who asked for her last name to be omitted for privacy reasons.
“He is so deeply loved by his family, and right now we are desperately praying, hoping and believing that Karan is safe, alive and somehow making his way back to us.
“If you are in Nepal, travelling in the area, know someone who is there, have seen Karan, or have ANY information about his whereabouts, please contact the appropriate authorities or rescue teams immediately.”
A group photograph taken on Tuesday morning — capturing the smiling trio shortly before their tour departed Kathmandu — was the last update the families received.
The group included eight Americans, seven Britons, six Australians, one New Zealander, two Canadians, one South African and one Malaysian, said Sujan Wasti, head of Kailash Journeys’ Nepal operations.
Michael Ryan Keats, 37
Michael Keats, a keen bushwalker from NSW, was understood to be returning from a journey to Mount Kailash in Tibet, and had reached the border crossing into Nepal when the floods struck. The 37-year-old had been due to arrive home from his journey on Thursday night.
Keat’s family described the agony of not knowing his whereabouts as “unbearable”.
Sister Karen confirmed on Friday night that her brother was missing.
“While our hearts are carrying the unbearable weight of not knowing, we are holding on to hope & praying for a miracle,” she wrote.
“He travelled to this sacred part of the world on a journey [that] held such deep meaning for him.”
In a Facebook post, Keats described himself as a “teacher, a guide, a nature lover, and a mystic at heart”.
Keats said he completed a masters in teaching in 2017, and over the years had immersed himself in a wide range of nature-based learning, training, and ceremonies.
Sumi Adhikari, 41
Sydney woman Sumi Adhikari was travelling with the Isha Foundation on a pilgrimage, her husband Nava Pandey has confirmed to this masthead.
According to a Facebook post that was shared by her husband, he last heard from Adhikari just before the floods.
Her last known location was at the immigration office at the China-Nepal Gyirong border. She was also part of the S3 Isha Foundation group.
The Facebook post says Adhikari was in the “same area when the flood happened” and is seeking any information about her.
She has two children. Adhikari studied engineering and worked at Optus as a network engineer.
Sandeep Mohapatra, 43, and Sidharthi Kumari Sahu, 39
Sandeep Mohapatra, 43, and Sidharthi Kumari Sahu, 39, live in Wantirna South in Melbourne’s east and travelled to the Nepal-China border as part of a trek, their friend Manoranjan “Manu” Nayak told this masthead.
He said the couple moved to Australia in 2018 from the Indian state of Odisha, where much of their family remains. Nayak met them through the Odia community in Melbourne.
“We’re a very close community of people. We just met during the festive season,” Nayak said. “They didn’t have anyone here to help them. They were just migrants who came here.”
Mohapatra and Sahu’s last known location was an immigration centre, Nayak added, but they have been uncontactable since.
“It’s an extremely challenging and difficult situation,” he said.
Sandeep’s cousin, Soumya Mohapatra, told Reuters: “We last spoke to them on August 23 and received a text message the next day. Since then, we have had no information about their whereabouts.
“We have lost hope after hearing about the scale of the destruction and the number of deaths.”
Sreedharan Iyer Iyer, 52, Lakshmi Sreedharan Iyer, 50, Rishab Iyer Sreedharan Iyer, 23, and Rudhra Sreedharan Iyer, 20
A family from Cherrybrook, in Sydney’s northern suburbs, is among the missing.
Both Rishab and his brother Rudhra study medicine at the University of Newcastle. Their parents Sreedharan and Lakshmi co-own a tour business, Oz Trek International.
In a Facebook post, Nisha Khadka said family friends Sreedharan, Lakshmi Iyer, Rudhra and Rishab Iyer were missing in Nepal.
Khadka said the group was last known to be in Kathmandu before the natural disaster and friends were urgently trying to locate them.
“If anyone has seen them, has any information about their whereabouts, or has found them safe, please contact me as soon as possible,” she said.
Chandrasekaran Muralitharan, 47, Shylaja Muralitharan, 42, Ashwin Muralitharan, 14, and Aarush Muralitharan, 11
Another pair of brothers, Aarush and Ashwin Muralitharan, and their parents were travelling with Himalayan Glacier and are currently missing.
At 11 and 14, the boys are among the youngest Australians affected by the flood.
The younger brother Aarush is involved in junior athletics at Cherrybrook.
Kumar Sampath, 61
Melbourne father Kumar Sampath, 61, is also among the missing pilgrims.
“He’s a hardworking, successful entrepreneur who came to Australia with nothing and provided his family with everything they wanted,” Kumar’s son Mani told this masthead.
“He loved hiking, nature and recently retired and wanted to explore his faith.”
Sampath ran an engineering business specialising in railways before he retired. His son said his family hoped he would be found alive.
Narayan Panthi, 46
Brisbane father Narayan Panthi was on a sacred pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, embracing the mantra of “living in the present”.
Posting about his nine-day journey on social media, he wrote: “May this sacred journey to Kailash bring peace to my mind, joy to my soul, and new energy to my life.”
Krishna Prasad Dhakal, the operator of Kathmandu Holiday Tour and Travels, said a group of 17 people who had set out on a bus journey to Manasarovar were missing, including foreign nationals, and it hadn’t been possible to establish contact with any of them.
He said Panthi was part of the travelling group.
“It has not been possible to contact him or anyone else yet,” Dhakal said.
“I just spoke with family members; they are coming to meet me.”
Reshma Bhavin Patel, 46
Reshma Bhavin Patel was confirmed missing by her sister and a family friend in Nepal.
Her sister, Vaishali, said Patel was part of the Isha Sacredwalks Group, and that they had not heard from her since the floods.
Her group was at the Nepalese border and made contact with another group from the Isha, before going dark.
Patel is a mother of two, a 14-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, who are leaving for India alongside their family.
Her sister confirmed she worked for Canterbury-Bankstown Council.
The family friend also confirmed that the Newcastle woman was travelling with a group on the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra pilgrimage.
Venkatraman Balakrishnan, 52, and Chitra Venkatraman, 46
The son of Sydney-based couple, Venkatraman Balakrishnan, 52, and his wife Chitra Venkatraman, 46, told the ABC the last contact he had with them was when they were about 15 kilometres from the Tibetan border.
“I’d like to see my parents and everyone who went with them back in one piece, and that everyone else there is as safe as possible,” he said.
Uday Shivamurthy, 60, and Kripa Shivamurthy, 56
Sydney-based couple Uday and Kripa Shivamurthy were on a three-week pilgrimage to Mount Kailash – a trip they took every few years – their niece Navya Nataraj said.
In a post to Instagram, Nataraj said that the couple had just finished their pilgrimage and were “confirmed to be on the China side of the immigration center in Giyrong at 9:05 AM when flash floods hit the area at 9:14 AM”.
“We are holding onto hope — being on that side of the immigration building gives us reason to believe they may have had a chance to get to safety,” she wrote.
“Our family is devastated.”
“We have been getting conflicting reports. But then today they released aerial images,” Nataraj told CNN. “We are distraught and devastated.”
Uday worked at QBE Insurance and NAB, while Kripa has been an accountant for more than 25 years, according to their LinkedIn profiles.
Shivaprasad Rakesh Nayaka, 39
Melbourne-based father Shivaprasad Rakesh Nayaka, a 39-year-old engineer, was at the Nepal-Tibet border heading back to Kathmandu after a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash when disaster struck, his family friends Venkat Narayanan and Nagaraji Navalgatti told this masthead.
Nayaka is also from Wantirna South like other Melburnians identified as missing, but his friends do not believe he knew the Victorians caught up in Wednesday’s tragedy.
Narayanan has known Nayaka since he moved to Australia in 2008 from the southern Indian state of Karnataka and shared family holidays with him.
“He’s such a nice person, humble person, and a jovial-type,” Narayanan said.
“I’m so sad … I couldn’t digest it.”
Nayaka’s wife and two kids are still in Australia, he added.
“Everyone’s so upset,” Narayanan said. “I’m not in a position to know, but we still believe he is living somewhere.”
Bharat Mangwani, 41
Sydneysider Bharat Mangwani was confirmed missing by his friend Harsh Maheshwari. The 41-year-old was last heard from just before the floods, where he was in good spirits having completed his pilgrimage.
Mangwani was also travelling as part of the S3 group with Trekkers Societies. He was last seen at the Gyirong Immigration Facility in Tibet, and was on his way to Kathmandu, and then to Delhi.
The engineer based in Kellyville has two children – a nine-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter – and his wife is currently in Nepal, searching for him.
Gopi Agastya, 45
In a short message to this masthead, Venkatesh Bittu confirmed his brother-in-law Gopi Agastya, 45, was missing and that his family was “waiting for him to return safe”.
The father of two is a software engineer and lives in Parramatta. His last known location was the immigration office at Gyirong, on the Nepalese-Tibetan border.
His family is in Hyderabad, India, staying with relatives and waiting on any updates.
He was also part of the S3 Group travelling with the Isha Foundation.
There has been no update on his whereabouts or wellbeing since Saturday.
Suhasini Kandimalla, 44
Kandimalla, a mother of two from Springfield in south-west Brisbane, was travelling to the Nepal-Tibet border post with the Kailash Journey Group, a friend said.
She was in contact with family the day before the floods struck, the friend said.
Kandimallah is a New Zealand citizen but had applied for Australian citizenship and was intending to attend a citizenship ceremony after returning from her Mount Kailash journey.
Kanagamah Sundrasan, 59
Sundrasan, also from Springfield in Queensland, had been travelling with Kandimalla.
Sundrasan’s daughter Swaatika Kanniah told the ABC her mother was “very giving” and “the kindest woman ever”.
“She doesn’t really go on trips like this; that’s why it was very exciting for her to travel and do this thing that she always wanted to do.”
Other missing Australians
Nepalese police have provided a list of missing Australians, which includes names that were previously reported, names of people from different travel groups, and unconfirmed victims.
Further information on their whereabouts and wellbeing is still unclear.

The Isha Foundation said 11 Australians were missing after a building they were believed to be in was destroyed by floodwaters.
The last known signal from the group, which had completed its pilgrimage, was after members entered an immigration building on the border, said the Isha Foundation’s founder Jagadish Vasudev, who is known as Sadhguru.
“They believe the entire group was in the building,” Vasudev said. “The town where they were entering, almost half the town is carved out of the valley.
“At 9.05 we received a message from group leader Praveen. He sent a message saying they had arrived at immigration. This event happened at 9.14am.
“His [Praveen’s] Nepal phone did not become active. If he had crossed, his Nepal phone should have become active but he did not come.”
