Jennifer Garner and Judy Greer were spotted on the set of Netflix’s “13 Going on 30,” filming a scene with Emily Bader, who stars in the remake with Logan Lerman.
Garner, who played Jenna Rink, the awkward teenager magically transported back to her 30-year-old life as a powerful but messy magazine editor, was already on board the project as an executive producer. Last week she said Varieties Marc Malkin that she would be visiting the set.
“I’m going to go [and] “Let’s see if I can go around and see if they put me somewhere,” Garner joked. “Maybe it could be in the background of any ‘Thriller’ scene.”
But it seems like Garner was just playing coy. Set photos, published Tuesday by Just Jared, show Garner, Bader and Greer, who played Jenna’s nemesis Lucy “Tom-Tom” Wyman, dressed up and filming a scene in a building in Santa Monica, California. Netflix has not confirmed that they are reprising their roles, and the logline for the project is being kept under wraps, so it’s unclear how much Garner and Greer influence the plot.
The new “13 Going on 30” is directed by Brett Haley, who recently directed the Netflix adaptation of Emily Henry’s “People We Met On Vacation,” starring Bader, which was a huge hit. Taylor Zakhar Perez, Jessica Alba, Adeline Rudolph, Taylor Ortega, Tim Meadows and Dan Bucatinsky will also star in the film. 2004’s “13 Going on 30,” directed by Gary Winick and also starring Mark Ruffalo, grossed $96 million in theaters and became a cultural touchstone for Millennial audiences.
In April, Garner said Variety why he defended the reboot 22 years after the original comedy hit theaters.
“It’s the first of many, many times that someone has brought [a reboot] It’s up to me, so I started to feel like I don’t want this to happen without me being involved,” he said. “Jenna is very close to me, but there’s a musical [adaptation] happening to be in Toronto. There was a TV show I was on that never took off. …And in this case, of course, I said I was interested.”
The script and Bader, whom he described as “magical,” nailed it. “I want to see her do it,” Garner continued. “I mean, why should it be just me? Why can’t magic strike twice? Why can’t she have an amazing experience with it in a way that the audience can relate to again?”
Greer agreed, adding, “It’s been ours for so long. Let’s let someone else try it.”
At the time, there were no plans for Garner and Greer, who were promoting their latest collaboration on Apple TV’s “The Last Thing He Told Me,” to reprise their roles. But if the opportunity arose, both actresses were willing. “I would literally do anything Jennifer Garner asked me to do,” Greer joked. “And since she’s the executive producer, she would be my boss again and I would do whatever she wanted me to do.”
Netflix had no comment on the casting.
